i've been wondering your art process with the colors.
do you draw them first, and then draw the character?
or do you draw the character, and then the color underneath?
(to specify, i am speaking of the splotch of vivid color beneath the lineart of your art)
I've been asked this a couple of times, so I'll try my best to wholly explain my process with that art style! (I'm not the best at verbalizing my artistic process , but I'm trying my best! Sharing information is important)
Tried using my "Lyle with a Mop" drawing as the example for this question. Only remembered to take a screenshot once i drew in the mop though, sorry Xo[
But For starters-- I do just start with a vague blobby shape of colour. The colour is selected at random basically. I have an mspaint palette in Procreate, and choose a colour based on feeling alone. Lyle with a mop felt like a cyan idea, so its shape was cyan!
Then after making the shape, I scout out a spot of movement or direction in the shape that gives a good idea for where a body part anywhere would be. In this one, the leftmost swoop looked perfect for where Lyle's robe could be draping over his arm, so I started with drawing his hands and the mop.
With that in mind-- I also do NOT sketch out these pieces when I draw in this style! Personally, I use this style as a nice way to embrace mistakes and wonky aspects in art by just having everything be built out one piece at a time. This is backed up by how everything is done on the same layer, so I can't erase or sketch even if I wanted to lol.
It makes the style very freeing in my opinion. But if you tryna replicate the style, feel free to sketch or use multiple layers, this is just something I like doing.
These two are similar in what I'm conveying, so I'll put 'em side by side.
Blacking out areas and making strong shadows!!! Very fun and a good staple in this style. It's secretly where all the "detail" and texture comes from. I make a lot of strokes when doing detailing, leaving parts "uncoloured" by the black going over the shapes. Important for hidden features that could be protruding slightly and catching the light, such as Lyle's teeth and the ridges around the different camera lenses
Idk what else to say.. The art style is meant to be loose and riddled with errors, but do whatever you want! Art is meant to be fun, take it in any direction you want. I don't know if people want to try to 1-to-1 replicate my style or not, but maybe this can be helpful for just whatever reason people find it to be.
I have a lot of fun with art, hope that whatever way y'all are drawing, you can have fun with art as well ^u^
I think the Lyle community wants to harm me after these recent few posts ðŸ’
having my requests open just to keep posting Lyle. I swear I’m gonna draw requests too.
