TESV: Skyrim ‣ Sonnja Little-Stone (archived)
Name: Sonnja Little-Stone
Title(s):
the Bone-Breaker
Shield of Morthal
Race: Nord
Gender: Female
Age: 40
Birthdate: 9th of Sun's Height, 4E 161
Birthsign: The Tower
Class: Warrior
Faction: Neutral
Occupation: War veteran
Hometown: Dragon Bridge
Current residence: Morthal
Appearance: The first thing one notices about her is the fact that she is missing her left arm from the elbow down. Average-height but otherwise sturdy, with fair skin, short dirty blonde hair and gray eyes, Sonnja's looks don't distance her from the typical Nord. She obtained many scars from battle, most of which have healed completely.
Personality: Sonnja's presence is marked by sheer grit and a lingering sense of bitterness. She is sharp-tongued and instigating, and enjoys breaking her opponents' spirit by taunting them repeatedly. She is not exceptionally talkative, and has verbally expressed her refusal to open up to people. She holds a deep understanding of her own feelings and almost never represses them, as she takes advantage of the strength they imbue her with. Sonnja is a canonical defender, sworn to protect her allies, but also a pillar of self-dependence as she, in her own words, "would never lower [her] shield to anyone" regardless of wealth or rank.
Background: Sonnja grew up in Dragon Bridge, the middle daughter in a family of mill workers. She enrolled in the Imperial Legion at the ripe age of 22 to fulfill her childhood ambition of fighting under the Empire's banner. She lost her arm in battle against the Forsworn Looters, which resulted in her being forced into early retirement. The Imperial Legion paid her compensation, but that battle had cost her something priceless.
She afterwards willingly turned her back to the Empire, moving to neutral land to avoid imminent conflict with the brewing Stormcloak uprising.
[The following can only be discovered by reading her journal, as Sonnja purposely omits this whenever she decides to talk about her past. The climax represents the Forsworn ambush, where she had lost her arm, along with something of greater value.]
Sonnja met Lismund Montrose, a Breton mage, while escorting one of the Empire's spokespersons through Skyrim. Affectionately nicknamed "Lis", the Breton made permanent residence at the College of Winterhold, assisting the Imperial army with her magical resourcefulness and oratorical talent. She and Sonnja grew very close over the next few years and confessed their love of each other in the final month of the year 197. They each acquired an amulet of Mara and pledged to marry after they'd saved enough money to build their own home. A Forsworn ambush at Deep Fold Crossing resulted in a number of casualties, Lismund being one of them. The two women shared one last heart-wrecking moment before Lismund's parting, which changed Sonnja's outlook on life decisively. She concludes her last diary entry by saying that "[she]'d rather have lost every single one of [her] limbs in that battle if that meant [they] could have lived to exchange oaths."
Preferred skill(s):
Block
Heavy Armor
One-Handed
Weapon(s) of choice:
the Oathkeeper (massive enchanted shield, named in Lismund's memory)
One-handed swords
Spell(s) of choice: N/A
Armor of choice: Heavy
Trivia:
Sonnja was nicknamed the Bone-Breaker for her signature finishing move, where she uses her shield to slam her enemy into the nearest horizontal terrain and crush their bones.
She will give her amulet of Mara away if confronted about the Forsworn incident, stating that she has no use of it anymore.
Her horse is named Damsel, a reference to the damsel-in-distress trope.
Sonnja's distinct fighting style would not be possible to pull off had it not been for her missing limb.
