You leave Bishkek in morning traffic. Two hours later, you are climbing a gravel road above the treeline, and the city already feels like something you made up.
The road to Son-Kul crosses the Kyzart Pass at 3,350 meters. There are no guardrails. There is no cell signal. There is a herd of horses standing in the middle of the track, and they are not moving.
You wait. They wait. Nobody is in a hurry. This is the rhythm now.
Son-Kul sits at 3,016 meters — a vast, flat lake surrounded by nothing but grass and sky. The yurts look like scattered pearls from above. At night, the herders burn dried dung for heat, and you fall asleep to a smell that is half campfire, half something ancient you cannot name.
Dawn comes without a sound. The lake shifts from black to silver to pale blue. The mountains behind it catch the first light on their peaks. For a few minutes, everything holds still.
Then a horse walks past your yurt, close enough to touch. And the day begins.
We drove a Toyota 4Runner from Bishkek — delivered to the airport by Nomad Car Rental. The kind of trip where the vehicle matters as much as the view, because if the car cannot handle the pass, you never see the lake.

There are about 2000 lakes in Kyrgyzstan, the total area of which is 6836 square kilometers. Most of the lakes are alpine and lie at an altitude of 2500 to 4000 meters above sea level. The main reason for the formation of lakes is the melting of glaciers. Only 16 Kyrgyz lakes exceed an area of 1 square kilometer. Lake Son-Kul is located in the very heart of the Inner Tien Shan, 90 km north-west of Naryn. The hollow, 57 km long and 29 km wide, is located inside powerful mountain heaps. In the center of this basin is the second largest lake in Kyrgyzstan - Son-Kul. It is 29 km long and 17 km wide. Its surface is at an altitude of 3016 m above sea level, the area of the mirror is 270 sq. km, maximum depth 13.2 m. The lake is of tectonic origin, filled with fresh water. 18 streams flow into the lake, and only the Son-Kul river flows out. Only 4 rivers have a constant flow into the lake: Kum-Bel, Ak-Tash, Tash-Tebe and Kara-Keche. The coastal strip has a different character: the northwestern part is indented by rocky bays and bays, and the rest has gentle banks with separate swampy areas. In the river valley - Son-Kul. There are many thermokarst funnels, which were formed as a result of thawing of permafrost located at a depth of 1.5 m. At 4 km from the source, the water flow breaks into a rocky gorge with a cascade of waterfalls - Kek-Jerty. The lake freezes in the second half of October, begins to break open from the ice at the end of April. The thickness of the ice in some years reaches 1 m. The fauna is extremely diverse. In summer, various species of ducks, gulls, herons and other waterfowl (66 species) nest here. Due to the harsh climate, the lake was fishless until 1959.
