Becoming a Shou, it seems Isora is an exception despite his sex is because Isora genuinely wants to be a man. After he was defeated and his body revealed, he shout everyone to not called him a woman.
Isora is essentially a trans man. I don’t know much about Japanese’s view toward transgender, so I’m curious about how that ties to Isora.
Also, there are some similarities between him and Mikura. Both were born as women and later identified themselves as men. The only core difference is that Mikusa disguised herself to protect herself from Harunawa. Isora was forced in a role as woman he doesn’t conform to, and wanted to be a man, but he lived in an unfortunate and imperil time period with strict gender roles.
In hindsight, Isora was angry that he went through unfortunate experiences and betrayal, something Mikusa never has to go through.
