The thematic richness of Gregor having to drop Solovet's dagger to kill the Bane. How he is able to do what he has to do without using her tactics. How has to let go of Sandwich's sword to take Ares' claw. How Luxa has to let go of her anger, of hurt both justified and festering, to take Ripred's claw.
After the dungeon, was Hamnet more afraid of Solovet or eager to prove he could be a good soldier? Was he defiant or just broken? Did he lie awake at night wondering how she could've done this to him or did he lie awake at night coming up with ways to please her? Did he agree to attack the Garden of the Hesperides because he was afraid to say no or because he wanted to be the hero everyone thought he was? Because he wanted everything to go back to the way it was before the dungeon or because he wanted everything to change so he'd never be put there again? Did he want to hate his mother or want to make her proud? After the dungeon, did he become as fragile as glass or as hard as stone?
Gregor asks Vikus one time about why he and Solovet are married, and Vikus smiles and makes a joke that it is a mystery to them as well
but... what if it wasn't- in the beginning?
What if, originally, Vikus was Solovet. He was ruthless and cunning, the best of kind, the most skilled swordsman, he could compete with Ragers he was so good at killing
It's what drew Solovet to him. His bloodthirstyness, his tact and his hatred.
He fought rats and he hated them like everyone else and she was the calmer one, the more normal one, the one who rats pleaded for mercy.
That is what drew her to him, and the reason they married. The reason they had children.
But then the Garden happens. And when Ripred says "he was too much like Vikus, in that retrospect" He means that Hamnet was dedicated to the cause- to an extent.
The Garden happens and Vikus is horrified. It wasn't his idea. Solovet came up with it, because she felt a little shunned by his shadow, and she was so proud of the idea.
Vikus didn't like it. Too many variables. Too many things could have gone wrong. Too many things did.
Vikus meets Ripred for the first time after that day. They fight. They scream. They argue. Maybe Hamnet has fled at this time. Maybe Vikus lost someone too.
Once they are all tired out- they match each other for speed, skill, rage, and verbal talent too- they sit.
They share their grief. Their pain.
They see that they are reflections of each other. A rager, a natural born killer. A talented Killer. Both lost their children. Both want it all to stop.
And that is when Vikus becomes who we meet him as.
That is who Vikus is when Gregor speaks to him.
That is the Vikus who still loves his wife, oh how he loves her, but she looks at him and cannot see the man she fell in love with. They no longer fit together. They no longer fight alongside each other.
(This leads into the second headcanon of NeeveevexSolovet, but that is for another day)
