Rook: why did you stab varric
Solas: he challenged me to be introspective and when I tried I got spooked
Concept: Solas is not the only one trapped in the Fade by that little incident. Varric is right there with him, and now they're the devil and angel on Rook's shoulder while they get used to being alone together.... with plenty of time to hash out their differences.... and remember the good times they had together in the Inquisition... and maybe... the good times they could still have????
Happy Thedas Weekend! OK writing prompt time! Could I be a little evil and suggest Persimmon (bury me amid nature’s beauty) and Xeranthemum (eternity, immortality) for Solas/Varric?
i've had this fill sitting since monday, i had a fun time writing it! thanks for the prompt!!! (from march, wowie)
300 words | inquisition(/veilguard) | solas & varric | @thedasweekend | ao3 link
It’s not often Solas gets turned around, but he finds himself puzzled, stuck somewhere in the Hinterlands, with Varric as his company. In the distance, the Inquisitor calls out to them, asking them to wait until they’re found. They must not be too far away from the Inquisitor, so they hover in the field beneath a tree.
Grass, trees, the sky, the faint image of a bear in the distance. Life surrounds Solas, buzzing and light, breathtaking in a way he does not experience in full in the Fade. Remnants of a past life lead to a pang of regret that he never stopped to smell the roses, so to speak.
It’s not right, but it’s beautiful.
Solas smiles, wraps his hands around his staff and peers into land before him. “I think it would be nice.”
Varric wags a flying insect off his boot. “What?”
“To be laid to rest here,” Solas says, wistful, playing pretend. He glances down at Varric. “I imagine you do not feel the same.”
Varric groans. “No way, not me. Burn me to ashes like everyone else.”
“So you have no qualms with no longer being a part of this world?”
“Nope.” Varric swats at another insect and grunts. “Let’s stop talking about dying, huh, Chuckles? Not something I like to think about.”
“I see. Apologies.”
After a short while of silence, Varric heaves a sigh. “Why the death talk, anyway?”
“Do you not ponder on the inevitability of it?” Solas asks. “How will people go? What will happen to them beyond this life?”
“It’s what people do,” Varric grumbles, “and Maker knows what happens. Come on, let’s find the Inquisitor before I get devoured by these damn bugs. I hate waiting around.”
As Varric treks forward, Solas’s grip on his staff tightens.
“Indeed.”
