I have to confess that I’ve never seen Homestuck (which this shirt references), but as soon as I saw what looked like a green sun, the astronomer in me took over. For all I know, it’s not even supposed to be a sun, but a glowing green orb always makes me thing of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).Â
SDO has in geosynchronous orbit around Earth since 2011 and is constantly observing and imaging the sun across a range of wavelengths. The green image above represents our sun as seen in extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray wavelengths and is useful for studying solar flares.Â
If you’re a sun (data) worshiper like me, you can see what the sun looks like this very minute over on the SDO website. And if you’re a Homestuck fan, you can wear this shirt with a little more science pride than before you read this post.Â

The sun was absolutely bananas today, y’all. Fun fact; region 2866 isn’t just one spot. It’s 23 sunspots in a trench coat, 1.3 billion km² in size.

Join Kuiper Kat's Astronomy for some solar observing during International SUNday located at Bethesda Fountain in Central Park! We will meet near the fountain, where we will hunt for spots on the surface of the Sun!   Free admission, all ages welcome.  According to Phil Plait, International SUNday is "an informal holiday to celebrate the nearest star in the Universe." International SUNday was introduced and made popular through the efforts of the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project (CBSAP) and continues its legacy through public efforts and initiatives.  ​ The Summer Solstice is June 21st, but the 2018 International SUNday will be June 24th. This is a once a year, worldwide outreach event to celebrate the Sun and the Summer Solstice! We telescope will be set up at Bethesda Fountain from 1pm-4pm.  Not in the area? That’s fine! This is a global event with various clubs, organizations, and individuals celebrating! To locate an event closest to you, head to the SOLARACTIVITY group on Facebook, or Night Sky Network's website for listings!Â
