I thought it would be helpful to give you some pointers on colorwork socks, in case this will be your 1st pair. If you’ve seen any of my sock patterns before, you might notice that I enjoy working the colorwork on the instep. There are a few reasons for this. For one, I can SEE the design when I have my shoes off & feet up relaxing at home. It’s no fun to have the design hidden under my pant leg. Another reason is that I find the fit works out nicely here. I didn’t bother to adjust my needle size when knitting the colorwork band (although you certainly could). Having the fit just a tiny bit snugger around the instep keeps my sock on nicely. That’s especially helpful in a short sock. To keep the knitting loose, I don’t catch my floats all that often. Maybe every 5th or 6th stitch. Another trick I’ve seen is to turn the sock inside out while knitting the colorwork - running all your floats along the outside of the work. It looks weird, but people swear by it. Lastly, I think it is most helpful to find yarns that are either all the same brand (or if it’s indie dyed, same base yarn) - the closer you can get to similar weigh and twist to the yarn, the easier it’s going to be to knit up into a colorwork pattern.
