It's actually a really cool idea. 

Welcome to Socks For Dobby, a newly founded charity that donates socks to those in need. In a fictional magic series, otherwise known as Harry Potter (written by J.K. Rowling), there is a house elf who goes by the name of Dobby. He collects socks because Harry Potter himself freed Dobby out of slavery with one, and they are thus close to the elf’s heart. With that being said, the goal of this organization is to collect pairs of socks, to be donated to those in need. You’re probably wondering- socks? What good would a pair of socks be to someone in need? Or any person, really?

When Dobby received Harry’s one sock, it changed his life. Though a sock seems insignificant, Dobby was also insignificant in the Wizarding World. He was constantly overlooked, to say the least, and treated like scum. The sock certainly didn’t make him rich, famous, or appear physically any different. But with this sock, given to him by one of the only people who had recognized him as a person, Dobby couldn’t have been happier.

People in need aren’t always homeless. People in need aren’t always living in foreign countries. People in need aren’t always diseased. People in need are right next door to us, but because they are not the most needy, or living in thepoorest conditions, they are overlooked. If we are to ignore them, simply because they could ‘have it worse,’ we are no better than Lucius Malfoy, the man who enslaved Dobby and did not give him the chance to rise to his potential. Sure, a pair of socks won’t guarentee one a job, a future, happiness, or even a better life. However it is a start, and I’m sure Dobby would agree with me as I say that a start is better than nothing. A pair of socks can make a difference.

“Dobby has got a sock,” said Dobby in disbelief. “Master threw it, and Dobby caught it, and Dobby — Dobby is free.”
