something is bugging me. i was on Facebook and saw a friend i had to step away from posted a status about her gratitude for her “school family.” any time she posted about our sober circle, in gratitude anyway, we were only ever her friends. never family. so that makes me wonder - what does it take to be someone’s family?
you might say undying loyalty, or mutual respect, or even easy vulnerability. i thought we had all those things in our friendship, when it was healthy anyway. the girls I'm friends with now i would call family. i can go to them with anything. they make me feel strong in my own skin, and i can let my guard down with them. i had that with her, or so i thought. maybe i didn’t imagine it, but it definitely seems to only have gone one way.
i thought i had moved on from the pain i felt about losing her as a friend, worked through what my life would be like without her presence. apparently i was wrong. the post she put up today actually upset me, and for a moment i was angry with myself for setting a boundary with her. i hope she knows i miss her a lot and wish she could be part of my life, but since that isn’t the case i have to learn to move on.
