The night is cold. Its crisp air clings to Xiao's cheeks and nose; and though he feels it, he is far from bothered. Nothing compares to the chill of her hands, not even the freezing winters he'd spent sitting amidst wafts of snow, starving for her amusement.
When he enters the sacred rooms of the Jade Chamber, he shakes off the chill in a bodily shudder. On the tianquan's table he places a single glaze lily before seating himself in an unseeming corner. Here he shall stay until she returns - eyes closed and deep in meditation.
hii i was wondering if you have any other cdrama recs that's similar in tone to cql that's not shl? it doesn't have to be adapted from danmei either. i've tried ashes of love but the generous use of cgi kinda threw me off. i tried handsome siblings too, and i found that i LOVE wuxia as a genre but the pace feels a little all over the place so i didn't finish it either. any kind of help would be much appreciated!
I donât watch as much cdrama as I would like⌠I think @baoshan-sanren @wuxian-vs-wangji @wuyus, @minmoyu, and @drwcn all watch more than I do i think.... iâm just not good at focusing on ANYTHING tbh. ooof.
This post got long. TL;DR: iâd probably say try out Ever Night, Legend of Fei, and Love and Redemption in that order.Â
I recommend Nirvana in Fire a TON but itâs not the same -- much heavier but the pacing is AMAZING.Â
Joy of Life and Sleuth of Ming Dynasty are both very good so far but iâm not done with them. Theyâre not really wuxia. Joy of Life is like a isekai. and Sleuth is semi-wuxia but period specific and case solving. Lots of food.
You might enjoy movies such as Painted Skin and Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity.
Also check out some danmei based donghuas. you might have fun. For a much more rambley list... see after the cut
AND! i almost forgot!!!! check out mydramalist. a lot of shows are listed there and maybe you can see what you like. iâll probably watch anything as long as itâs well done... or pretty enough... hahaha.Â
That said, since Nov 2019 I have watched/half heartedly paid attention to while playing phone games:
Love and redemption â this one was ok. It was almost really good and then kinda fell flat for me. I donât think Iâd watch it again but I did like the setting and a lot of the premise.
And the winner is love â this one is fun! But the first 12 eps are slow and I have a hard time caring. The rest get a bit better. I didnât hate it. I did like how they randomly killed off characters so that was good. Flirty Luo Yunxi with a fan was definitely a perk. If you like him, I recommend.
Ever Night (I) â OH! This one is a ton of fun. I think its intricacy level and setting styles and storytelling pacing isnât too far off from CQLâs. but itâs only S1. WORTH IT, imo⌠but S2 is so different I couldnât make it past ep 1
Nirvana in Fire â AMAZING. BEST FREAKING CHINESE DRAMA IâVE EVER SEEN. PERIOD. HANDS DOWN. MIND BLOWING. But it IS INTENSE and not really like cql. Itâs fun but much much much heavier. I technically first watched this in 2016 but I rewatched it this year so itâs on the list.
Love o2o â not bad. Boring. Not much plot. The main ship are cute enough, I guess. Something to watch in the bkgd.
Kingâs Avatar â I seriously only watched this to see Yang Yang on my non-gif-making screen whenever I was waiting for things to happen in photoshop. Itâs ok. Cute. Feels like a sports anime. Is an esports show.
Legend of Fei â this might be your best bet on something close to CQL. The plot, imo, is a bit contrived⌠and it really kinda feels like a shonen manga if Iâm gonna be honest⌠maybe a shonen manga crossed with a season of super sentai.
Dating in the Kitchen â cute, straight, modern romance. The girl is only a TINY bit annoying. Sheâs a chef and spunky. It was fun.
Eternal Love â not terrible. Better than ashes of love. I donât really like yang mi that muchâŚ
Ashes of Love â do not recommend. Unless you adore Luo Yunxi. I also donât love Yang Zi⌠so that doesnât help. I havenât seen her in a role where I didnât want to smack her yet. (but my sample size is 2⌠so thereâs that)
Lost Tomb Season 1Â this was fun? again, something to only half pay attention to. cliche. tang yan is hot in it. and yang yang too... but not really enough of yang yang for me... ope.Â
(and of course, CQL and SHL)
Iâm assuming if youâre asking about cql, youâve looked at tgcf, mdzs, and svsss animations. Have you looked up the Qian Qiu donghua? I think itâs call âshan he tong beiâ⌠but I could be wrong. @hunxi-after-hours blogs about it a lot. Worth checking out. I loved the novel. Currently Iâm watching can ci pin on bilibili.
Iâm in the middle of:
Guardian â I like it even if itâs sometimes a bit cringy
Sleuth of Ming Dynasty â this one is FUN. I should pay more attention
Advance Bravely â I watch this after I drink booze and then only if I am streaming it as a group watch on discord. Itâs danmei and a hot mess of a show. Do not watch without emotional support. Do not watch as a serious show.
Joy of Life â this one is serious but good so far. Iâm scared to get too far because no word on S2 and I was burned with Ever Night. Itâs really good so far though⌠Iâm only only ep 7ish.
Ode to Joy â the cast is so good: Liu Tao, Wang Kai, Wang Ziwen, Jin Dong⌠but I just canât get into it.
Older shows I watched that i can remember:
My Sunshine: modern romance. Sad and melancholy in tone. Not like cql at all. But!! Luo Yunxi is in it briefly. And he is styled so poorly itâs just sad. And kinda funny. Tang Yan and Wallace Chung are great in it. I enjoyed it a lot. (granted, this was 2014/2015 and I mightâve been some various levels of depressed at the end of grad school⌠)
Princess Pearl: wuxia-ish. Zhao wei skyrocketed to fame with this show. It was fun. Qing dynasty to prepare you eyes for the queues⌠but itâs a lot of fun. If youâre a tea snob (like my dad was and now I am), youâll be pissed about a character claiming dragonwell tea is from taihu⌠but thatâs really just my own neurosis. I liked the spunky MC and her bff. Very nostalgic for me
Tiger Mom: Hilarious modern family/slice of life drama about raising kids in china. i loved it... but i love the two leads? one of which is zhao wei of princess pearl fame.Â
CCTVâs version of Romance of Three Kingdoms (1994), Journey to the West (1986), and Dream of Red Mansion (1987) are all amazing and cultural touchstones⌠but no⌠Iâm rambling. I should recommend this but that might be 90% of my nostalgia and cultural feels speaking. Nothing like cql⌠I should also recommend a good version of Outlaws of the Marsh⌠but I donât remember having any really grab me as a kid. Ope.
Wuxia shows based on Jin Yong novels (there are multiple versions of these, usually and 100% were wuxia staples for 80s/90s kids and even my parentsâ generation)
Legend of the Condor Heroes: classic. Iconic. Watch this to get a lot of Chinese references
Return of the Condor Heroes: shifu/disciple taboo trope, I liked it ok. Not my favorite. I did like a lot of the wuxia world building
Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre: good main character whump, main character takes a while to show up though⌠I didnât like how it felt like a harem anime for a bit⌠and the ML doesnât show up for a whileâŚ
Proud Smiling Wanderer: this one I loved. Also good MC whump. Uh⌠ok. I like whump⌠*facepalm* and I donât remember that much more of it but I did read it twice almost two decades ago and liked it⌠even if I didnât like the eunuch related weird stuff and that definitely didnât age well⌠it was a good storyâŚ
And i never did get into Deer and Cauldron. I read 3/5 to 4/5 of the novel, got really annoyed with the lack of morality of the MC and quit. it was fun but i had no desire to watch the show if couldnât even stomach the novel.Â
Heya, đ đŹâ¤ď¸đđ with Ladybug and Adrien for the emoji story please? :)
Okay. This didnât really turn out âshortâ, but⌠đ
Hope you like it! â¤
Word count: 800-ish.
ââââââââââââââ-
Ladybug had no idea what she was doing.
Cameras flashed and voices screamed as she stood in front of the statue. Chloe stood beside her, waving at the cameras with a few frustrated cries every few seconds.Â
âNo, this has to be only me and Ladybug! You see the statue? Itâs her, you fool! Not the cat!â
Ladybug forced a smile. She hated that Chat Noir couldnât come. Standing here without him was strange. He was her partner. Hearing people chant her name, begging for selfies and photos, felt like a betrayal of his trust.
He deserved more than this.
Her eyes drifted down the crowd, and froze when she saw a familiar blond. He was walking down the street, his backpack on his shoulders, humming to some melody on his earphones.
Ladybugâs heart skipped a beat. Without a thought, she called his name.
âAdrien!â
The boy froze in his tracks. He turned to Ladybug, and when his gaze met hers a smile rose to his face. His eyes shone in the winter sun, and for a moment it seemed like summer had come early;Â as if only they existed in the world.Â
Even with the costume, she was no match for his charms.
Chloe huffed. Her hold on Ladybug tightened as she attempted to recapture her attention. âLadybug! Eyes here!â
She jumped. âRight! Of course!â
âAnd what is with those sweaty hands? Are you nervous or something? Please, these are only pictures!â
An hour later, the formal event finally ended. Chloe turned her attention to the quality of each picture, while constantly reminding Ladybug to stay in place.
But that didnât stop her from zipping away. She needed to think.
Just as she landed in an empty alley, a shadow entered her vision. Ladybug jumped and turned to face her attacker, her instincts kicking in. However, when her gaze met beautiful emerald eyes, she immediately relaxed.
"Adrien! Youâre still here?â
He didnât meet her eyes. Blush coated his cheeks and his voice gradually weakened, until it was barely more than a whisper. âYeah, I just⌠wanted to talk with you.â
Adrien cleared his throat. Ladybug fidgeted. He opened his mouth, thought better of it, and closed it once again. She tried to speak, but her tongue wouldnât budge. Awkward silence settled between them.
Ladybug raised her head, only to meet Adrienâs eyes. His cheeks were darker than ever. His mouth was in an open âOâ shape and he looked a bit taken aback, as if that sentence surprised him too.
Her smile widened. âThank you.â
She scanned his face. The kindness in his eyes, the happiness on his lips, the blush to his cheeks. Seeing him like this, all shy and awkward, gave her the strong urge to kiss him.
And by the way his gaze softened, she sensed he did too.
âOh, Ladybug! Where are you?â
Ladybug froze. Chloeâs impatient cries echoed around her: demanding, pleading and begging she return. She shook her head with a sigh, her heart heavy with the knowledge of the moment she could have had.
She met his eyes once again. Adrien forced a smile, a forced laugh escaping his lips. âLadybug, about beforeâŚâ
She clenched her fists as determination filled her veins. She was Ladybug. She could do it. She would do it.
Ladybug stepped closer. They were now standing only inches apart, close enough for her to touch him. She cupped his cheek, rose on her toes, and smiled.
His eyes widened, and his face flushed tomato red.
Her lips touched his cheek, and he gasped.
She backed away. Adrien opened his mouth, but before he could say a word, a shrill voice filled the air.
âLadybug! Where are you?â
Ladybug sighed. She turned back to Adrien, an apologetic smile to her lips. âIâve got to go. Duty calls.â
Adrienâs lips slowly transformed into a smile of awe. His eyes shone brighter than ever, and his hand slowly rose to where her lips touched his skin. âI know.â
With a small wave, Ladybug started back in the direction of Chloeâs screams.  Her steps were slow and hesitant. Her eyes constantly turned back to him. Yet eventually, she turned the corner and disappeared from sight.
Adrien released a small breath. His heart still beat frantically, and his memory kept replaying that same moment again and again and again. He closed his eyes, etched the memory into his skin, before a voice broke his concentration.
âAdrien?â Plagg complained. âMy stomach is begging for some cheese. Plus, your fatherâŚâ
âWill be furious. I know."Â
But the smile didnât leave his face, because this was all worth it.
For that girl, he would do anything.

Sometimes the reality of my situation, as a self-sustained, 2x "essential" employee in a country where everyone seems to be..... Such assholes--it gets to me. With many many spirals.
Because I live alone, who would be able to help me if the worst happens? Who would help take care of my cat, pay my rent, financially support me, in a place where jobs are thin and the country is thinner.
And it's like, here; I like, joke about how maybe the reality would be that I'd barely get to see Lance, even tho we'd be spouses, bc of all his work, maybe even long missions or because I'd wanna travel another region and he has to stay behind as Champion, or whatever.
Like, yeah, we might not have that much time together every so often, and I'll miss him a lot, and what have you, but like.
I'd never feel alone. No matter how far, how long we've been apart; he'd make sure of that. I would always have him there, beside me, even through the scariest things imaginable. He would be that support. All those things that scare me the most right now, he'd be the answer for.
