Annette Auguste, also known as ‘Sò Ann’, was a Haitian activist and Vodoun folk singer. Her efforts to re-inseminate Haiti with native and evolving culture came from both her talent for Haitian folk music as well as her time within the socialist-democratic party of Fanmi Lavalas, of which she was one of the founders.

Fanmi Lavalas’ mission was based in a ‘growth with equity’ philosophy, and an amassment of Caribbean and progressive European ideals.  The words ‘Fanmi Lavalas’ translate roughly into ‘Avalanche Family’ or ‘Waterfall Family’, a description applied to themselves in the spirit of the Biblical great flood. 

Annette Auguste was detained by U.S marines on the presumption that she was involved in the 2003 attack at the University of Haiti. She was held for twenty months before being released on lack of evidence.
