Now for the million and one of ye obsessed with the idea of Bilbo staying in Erebore I have this idea coupled with another favourite headcanon of mine:
It's Bilbo's first year in Erebor.
At some point he says, in passing, that he's feeling a little homesick. The dwarves don't know what that means and so jump to the conclusion that it's some sort of Hobbitish disease. (It later turns out that the dwarves know what the emotion is, but the only time they ever talk about it is to other dwarves and so use the Dwarvish word for it, and so do not know the Westron word at all.)
Winter is setting in and when the following morning their favourite Hobbit arrives at breakfast with completely white hair (you know that popular headcanon), skips second breakfast (for whatever reason), and spends the rest of the day curled up knitting, on his own in front of the fire, they royally freak out thinking their hobbit is getting ill.
Cue Thorin being ridiculously soft to his husband, trying to comfort him (thinking he's ill.) Bilbo doesn't know what's going on exactly but is enjoying the extra affection.
Cue Ăin trying to work out A-what it is? and B-what's the cure?
Cue KĂli and FĂli treating their uncle with kid gloves, as if he's going to shatter at any moment.
Cue the rest of the Company being too-soft and too-nice, and trying too keep him comfortable. They know well enough their hobbit's the type to just push on through no matter the cost to his own health (just look how he acted through their journey, though maybe they're perturbed by his lack of complaining.)
Cue Bilbo being confused by the sudden change in everyone, very annoyed at being molly-coddelled, and at their record breaking leap to conclusions when he finds out what is actually going on.
@stardryad -- if not the inventor of snowy hobbits, the one who got the idea going.
I've been trying to find out who came up with the whole "hobbits with white hair in the winter" so as to give them proper credit (I have a few ideas extending/elaborating on this, which I'd like to do something with.) Would that be you?
If not, don't mind me, sorry! As you were! Thank you!!
Hello! I drew about it back then after talking about it with some friends on a bagginshield server, so it was a group effort! And I'm not sure if no one mentioned it beforehand đ¤ so at least, I was one person who talked about it and got the idea moving in the community!
Feel free to tag me when you post your ideas about it! I do love me some snow hobbits đ
And here is my ode to my 2nd most loved fic! Since A Future Bright as Snow was based of @stardryad-randomââs 1st snow hobbit image. I used the Boromir one as inspiration for this fic. đ Thank you so much to all my followers for all your support and love of my fics. We are almost to #1!Â
âAre we ready to return to Erebor?â Thorin asked his guard.
The dwarf nodded. Everything is packed, and the carriage is hitched butâŚâ
Thorin heaved a sigh as he had a feeling he knew exactly what was out of sorts. Or more accurately whom.Â
âThe Consort?â
âThe Consort.â The guard affirmed.
Thorin assured him he would take care of it as he slowly began to hobble down the unusually empty halls of Rivendell. So much has changed in the last seventy odd years since he was here last. Nevermind that he was now an old dwarf who had to get by with a cane, but he always remembered Imladris bathed in such a warm light. After the revelation of the Ring though, everything felt colder.Â
There was a spot though that Thorin remembered well. Fireflies and shared words with a burglar he thought he had no use for. Sure enough, as he crossed the bridge into the walled gardens, there was his hobbit. Bilboâs eyes were torn to the east. But he knew it was not their mountain home that held his attention. Rather, a group of eleven companions, two of which were their nephews.
The fetching color of snow white on the hobbitâs head had been a permanent fixture for awhile, but still caught Thorin off-guard against the surrounding orange and browns of the autumn-colored trees. Leaning on his cane, he took in the sight just a little longer. A lingering image of peace while he had it. Pretty soon, he hobbled over, wrapping his hand around his unsurprised hobbitâs waist. Turning his head to the side, he planted a kiss in Bilboâs curls.
âWhat have I done?â Bilbo murmured in despair.
âIt wasnât your fault, ibinĂŞ (my gem).â
âIâve been carrying an object of great evil that could forever end the world.âÂ
âAnd in doing so, you kept it out of evilâs hands for a little over half a century. Donât be so hard on yourself mudĂšmĂŞ (my comfort).â
Thorinâs thumb lightly grazed the hobbitâs wrinkled face trying to catch the tears as they fell.Â
âAnd now Frodo and Kili are out thereâŚwith those dear boys Sam, Merry, and PippinâŚwhat ifâŚ?â
AmrâlimĂŞ (My love), you canât think such things. Kili for all that he still acts like heâs seventy, is a very established warrior, and his elven love certainly wonât let anything happen to him. And our little snow bunnyâŚâ
Bilbo gave a snort at this which caused Thorin to smile as he pressed another kiss to his head.
âHe was raised by an idealistic dwarf and a very clever burglar. Iâd like to see them try to stop him.â
âYou must think me so silly and ridiculous.â
âNever.â Thorin stated, punctuating it with another kiss.
Bilbo finally turned to Thorin fully, there was a smirk on his face, but his eyes were so full of sorrow.Â
âHow can you make light of this terrible secret Iâve held from you?â
Ah, the heart of the issue then. Thorin let his cane fall from his hand as he gripped his belovedâs waist with the intent of never letting go.
âParaphrasing perhaps the most important words ever spoken to me, but I donât make light of it, Lukhudel (light of all lights). But punishing yourself wonât make it better. Forgive yourself, as I have forgiven you.â
âOh Thorin.â Bilbo sobbed, burying his head in Thorinâs chest. âItâs not the same.â
âYouâre right. Because I actually did hurt you. Yet, beyond my wildest hopes, you forgave me.â
Bilbo pressed a watery smile against Thorinâs cheek as he started to pet Thorinâs long white beard. Something that always filled Thorin with a sense of pride and affection.Â
âMy snowy raven, when did you get so wise?âÂ
Thorin chuckled. âIâve told you before that doesnât quite work. Ravens keep their colors in the winter.â
Bilbo humphed and continued his ministrations, causing something warm and fond to curl in his belly.Â
âHowever, to answer your question. I quite believe it was the day I asked you to marry me.â
Bilbo barked out a laugh before giving Thorin a real kiss this time. It was the most Thorin had been able to pry from him since their discovery of the true nature of Bilboâs little invisibility trick, and he wasnât about to waste the opportunity. When they finally did pull away, Bilbo was very quick to correct an early point of his.
âAlways so hard on yourself. It was rather easy to forgive you, Thorin Oakenshield.â
Thorin stood there smiling like an idiot at his little fussy hobbit as he fiddled with imaginary wrinkles in Thorinâs sleeve to distract himself from the adoration radiating from Thorin like a summer sun, turning Bilboâs cheeks a fetching pink.Â
âI supposeâŚwe are headed home then.â
Thorinâs smile slipped as he bent down to pick up his cane, cursing when his back twinged in the process. Bilbo rubbed at it with a half-hearted smirk. It was nearly every day now that one of them was complaining about feeling old. Thorin had remembered years ago finding it rather unfair that his husband had seemingly managed to stop aging, giving him the ability to tease Thorin indulgently over his mistake that day upon the ramparts. Looking back, it seemed so obvious something had beenâŚunnatural.Â
âI am afraid war will find us sooner rather than later.â Thorin admitted. âI need to make sure Fili is prepared.â
âAnd when an army sits upon our doorstep, will you ride off to meet them?â
Thorinâs silence was answer enough, and Bilboâs ears drooped as he immediately started fretting once more. However, he wasnât so irritated that he didnât link his arm with Thorinâs leading them back to the main entrance.Â
âItâs my nature, mudĂšmel (comfort of all comforts).â Thorin murmured.Â
âI know. Just as you should know that it is my nature to make sure you donât do anything too stupid when you are trying to be dramatic and kingly.â
Thorin gave Bilboâs hand a tight squeeze, but knew a subject change was in order. Before any more terrifying images of his old snow bunny in battle ill-equipped once more, could play out in his mind. His eyes flew east looking at the mountains they were about to cross. The mountains Frodo and Kili were most likely traveling south through at that very moment. His mouth pulled down at the sight of white blanketing the tops though.
âThe Misties seem to have gotten an early snow.â He remarked with a frown. âThatâll slow us down a bit.â
Bilbo chuckled. âI noticed that as well. I guess it slipped my mind to mention it.â
Thorin frowned over at Bilbo. Since when do things ever slip his mind? Bilbo immediately slapped at his arm with a furrow to his brows.
âDonât give me that look. Iâm not going senile. Just forgot for a moment. Itâs perfectly normal.â
It was the fourth thing Bilbo had just âforgottenâ that morning alone. However, Thorin chose not to mention it right now. He planted a small kiss to his hobbitâs curls instead. Bilbo huffed out his nose, grumbling under his breath about âoverly protective dwarvesâ.
âYou know what that means though, right? About the Fellowship?â
It didnât dawn on Thorin immediately, no. Not like it should. His thoughts still twisted up in his rapidly aging husband. However, as soon as he was able to circle back to snow-capped mountains did he realize what his husband was implying. He threw his head back in laughter.Â
âI donât think they were adequately prepared for four hobbits.â He grinned wolfishly.Â
âCertainly not a Brandybuck and a Took!â Bilbo agreed. âBut at least Frodo and Sam are there to keep them out of too much mischief.â
Thorin thought Bilbo drastically underestimated Frodoâs penchant for mischief, but kept his mouth closed unless he wanted to endure another two hour lecture on the merit of hobbit families and Baggins in general. One thing was for certain. He did not envy anyone on that quest having to deal with four tricky snow bunnies.

âWeâre going to make camp under that shelf!â Aragorn called back his companions above the blistering wind. âBoromir! Can you help the hobbits along?!â
âAye!â He shouted back.
He turned his head, blinking snow out of his eyes as he began to shout.Â
âLittle Ones? Where are you?â
However, he could discern nothing from the blanket of white reaching practically to his hips. Had they been swallowed by the snow drifts? Were they stuck somewhere?
âLittle hobbits!â He called again, pushing through the snow.
He dug around in places, looking for curly heads, but it was so difficult! Their hair having changed colors halfway up the mountain did not help with the lack of visibility. Boromir could feel the beginning of panic creeping into his chest as he began to search more animatedly.Â
âFrodo! Sam! Merry! Pippin! Come here, Little Ones!â
While Boromir started to move about frantically, it was all Pippin could do to hold in his giggles.Â
âShh!â Merry urged. âYouâll give us away.âÂ
Merry and Pippin proceeded to make exaggerated bouncing moments, catching Boromirâs attention before freezing and letting him call out once more.
âPerhaps we should stop them.â Frodo pointed out. âTheyâre going to wear the poor man out.â
Sam snorted. âThis is what you get inviting along a Took and a Brandybuck. But I swear if he calls us âlittleâ one more time, I will leave him out here with the two troublemakers.â
Frodo gave a sharp bark of laughter, not protesting a bit when Sam grabbed his hand to lead him towards the rest of the fellowship. Before they could reach the shelter though, Kili and Gimli passed right by them going to Boromirâs assistance.
âTheyâre wearing cloaks! Look for the green cloaks.â Kili ordered.
âDo you see green anywhere in this frozen landscape?!â Boromir snapped back.
âLook! Frodo used to play this game all the time with Fili and me. I think I know what Iâm talking about here! You look for the flash of clothing!â
Frodo gave a small smirk. Oh yes, he gave his older âcousinsâ clues alrightâŚbut only when he wanted to be found. And watching Merry and Pippin huddle lower to evade the dwarven eyes now, he didnât see this little game ending any time soon. However, that was okay. His young hobbity cousins deserved a little fun while they could afford it, and the Big Folk definitely needed to stop underestimating them.

In which hobbits hair becomes white during the winter: Decades later, this same fact makes Boromir's task to find the little ones much harder (it's all white from up there, poor man)
