âShiny New Idea Syndromeâ
Hey everyone, Abby here! Today Iâm talking about âShiny New Idea Syndrome,â a popular case among writers, and giving some tips on how to work with it or to defeat it.
What is âShiny New Idea Syndromeâ?
Put yourself in this situation. Youâre a writer, youâre doing well, youâre minding your own business with your one story idea. Itâs going great! Then one day, just as you finish working on your one project, a new idea presents itself to you and oh my GOSH, this is the best idea ever. It must be written immediately.
When you fall into this trap (multiple times), you probably have âShiny New Idea Syndrome.â (Weâre going to call it SNIS for the rest of this post.) SNIS is pretty much just what it sounds like. You constantly focus your attention on new and exciting ideas and end up leaving your old ones in the dust. For writers who want to make their stories into a career, itâs a dangerous affliction.
Working with SNIS
Maybe youâre like me and really do want to work on each new idea you get. Here are some of the methods I use that I think work the best for incorporating SNIS into your writing schedule:
Use a monthly calendar. You can print off a PDF of a monthly calendar and use it to organize your writing schedule. You donât have to use a new calendar every month or label the days or anything like that; just use it to schedule which days you work on what project. The Calendar app for iOS also works well for this, but I would definitely recommend printing something off to have a material copy.
âEvolveâ your ideas. This one is a bit harder to do but definitely helps you combat SNIS without jeopardizing your productivity. Take this brand new idea you have and dissect it. See what parts of it can be incorporated into your story, if any. Then your brand new idea has been put to work, and bam! Youâre good. (Be careful with this one â using it too many times for one project could result in you trying to fit too much into one story.)
Develop it a little bit (a little bit) and set it aside. Itâs not âjustâ an idea if you write it down and develop it slightly before setting it aside. This is my go-to method usually â Shiny New Ideas become projects more or less on the back-burner, and it makes it easier to focus on my main projects without a different idea trying to get my attention.
Combating SNIS
Or maybe these Shiny New Ideas are the absolute bane of your existence and you just want them gone so you can work on your current project without issue. Hereâs some advice for that, too!
Make a commitment to your current WIP. I would most recommend a daily goal â maybe it doesnât come in the form of a word or page count. But if you donât want to lose your current WIP to SNIS, then daily goals may become your friend. Commit yourself to contributing to your current WIP until you get it to where you want it to be (usually published). Sometimes you need these goals all the way through, maybe you donât. Whatever works!
Eliminate negativity about your writing. SNIS often occurs when your writing is starting to sag, but it is also prominent in writers who constantly belittle their own work. Usually people will work to avoid negativity, so trying to combat internalized negativity about this one WIP is what can often lead to the birth of your next idea. There are a few problems about this: a) it will happen continually with each project, because nobody is a perfect writer, and b) youâre using energy to belittle your WIP which is probably in its early stages, and that energy should go to editing instead so that you can improve.
Shiny New Idea Syndrome, while often regarded among writers as a sort of writing evil, isnât always bad. In fact, it can sometimes help your writing if you keep it under control. I hope these tips helped you with your own SNIS (unless you donât have it, in which case I envy you)!
So, thatâs all Iâve got for today. If you have any questions or if thereâs anything you want to see me talk about in my next post, please donât hesitate to leave a message in my ask or in my messages! Until next time, much love! <333

Sharanya Narayani International School: A Premier IB Day & Boarding School in Bangalore
Sharanya Narayani International School (SNIS) is one of Bangalore's most distinguished international institutions, offering a world-class IB education within a sprawling 60-acre green campus. Ranked among India's Top 7 International Day cum Boarding Schools, SNIS school Bangalore stands as a beacon of holistic, inquiry-based learning for students from Nursery through Grade 12.
About Sharanya Narayani International School
Sharanya Narayani International School is a co-educational Kâ12 day, weekly (5-day), and regular boarding school in Bangalore, promoted and managed by a non-profit charitable Trust, the Narayani Group of Educational Institutions. The school and the Trust are named in honor of Late Mrs. Narayani Abbaiah Reddy, the family matriarch of the Trustees, who despite lacking formal education herself, believed deeply in the transformative power of learning, especially for girls.
The school carries the name of her granddaughter Sharanya, as a tribute to the late Mrs. Narayani's extraordinary vision. This founding story gives SNIS school Bangalore a purpose that goes beyond academics: it is a mission-driven institution built on values of courage, compassion, and character.
Vision and Philosophy
SNIS operates on a "Thinking School" philosophy, the belief that students should be taught how to think, not what to think. Every aspect of the curriculum and campus life is designed to nurture curiosity, independent reasoning, and creative problem-solving. The school's guiding ethos is captured in this quote displayed prominently on its website:
"Intelligence plus character â that is the goal of true education." â Martin Luther King Jr.
This philosophy permeates how teachers engage students, how classrooms are designed, and how extracurricular programs are structured. SNIS aims to produce not just academically competent graduates, but responsible and ethical global citizens.
Academic Curriculum: Full IB Continuum
Sharanya Narayani International School offers a complete International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum across all school years, making it one of the few schools in Bangalore to offer the IB framework from Nursery to Grade 12.
IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) â Nursery to Grade 5
The IB PYP at SNIS focuses on developing the whole child, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. It nurtures natural curiosity and lays the foundation for lifelong learning through inquiry-based, interdisciplinary units of study.
IB Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) â Grades 6 to 10
The IB MYP bridges the gap between early learning and the demands of the Diploma. It builds critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to connect knowledge across subjects. Students are encouraged to reflect on their learning and take ownership of their academic journey.
IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) â Grades 11 & 12
The IBDP at SNIS is a rigorous, internationally recognized qualification accepted by universities worldwide, including IITs, IIMs, and all major Indian universities. IBDP graduates are eligible for entrance examinations like NEET, JEE, CET, UPSC, NDA, and CDS, making this program as relevant for Indian higher education pathways as it is for global ones.
The SNIS Advantage: What Sets This School Apart
1. Experienced, International Teaching Faculty
SNIS prides itself on a team of highly skilled, internationally trained teachers who bring global perspectives into the classroom. The student-to-teacher ratio is strictly maintained, with a maximum of 24 students per class. In junior school (Nursery to Grade 5), each class has both a class teacher and an assistant teacher. In senior school, ratios can be as low as 5:1, ensuring highly personalized attention.
2. A 60-Acre Green, Eco-Friendly Campus
Located at 232/1, Thoranahalli, Byranahalli Post, Near Hoskote on the outskirts of Bangalore, the SNIS campus is a sanctuary of learning nestled in nature. Spanning 60 acres, the campus generates its own power through eco-friendly initiatives and provides a calm, distraction-free environment ideal for focused learning. The campus is approximately 45 minutes from Kempegowda International Airport and 25â30 minutes from areas like Whitefield, Kadugodi, and ITPL.
3. Exceptional Sports Infrastructure
Sports at SNIS are not an afterthought, they are a core part of the curriculum. The school offers world-class facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports, with professional coaching and a structured sports curriculum. SNIS even features a Golf Excellence Programme, a rare offering among Indian schools, reflecting its commitment to nurturing diverse athletic talents.
4. Creative Arts & Beyond-Academics Programs
SNIS goes well beyond the standard curriculum with programs in Creative Arts, Robotics, Computer Science, and Science Labs. Students also participate in MUN (Model United Nations) and TEDx, building their communication, research, and leadership skills from an early age. An ESL (English as a Second Language) Camp also supports students from non-English-speaking backgrounds, reinforcing the school's inclusive, multicultural ethos.
5. Scholarship Opportunities
SNIS offers the SNIS Outstanding Achievement Scholarships to recognize and reward academic merit, making quality international education more accessible. The school also provides merit scholarships as part of its broader commitment to access and aspiration.
6. College Counselling & University Placement
A dedicated college counselling team guides students from Grade 9 onward through the university application process, helping them identify the right institutions domestically and globally. The school regularly organizes university fairs, giving students and parents direct exposure to college options across the world.
