OMG TRICK OR TREAT SAF
Sakura doesnât notice at first -- no one notices at first. Itâs easy not to notice, at first. She has a good skin care routine -- which sheâs yelled about loudly enough that most people are familiar with it -- and sheâs always looked young for her age. People start to notice when itâs obvious that Ino -- someone whose skin care routine is even more in depth than Sakuraâs, which they are, again, aware of via yelling -- looks older than her. But thereâs an easy explanation for that -- after all, wasnât Sakuraâs teacher known for her youthful henge? So people roll their eyes but they donât comment where Sakura can hear them, and she doesnât notice anything different -- because there isnât anything different for her to notice. Quite literally.

Snabb observation jag vill dela;
Tips. Vi hÜrs.
One of my recent favourite linguistic phenomena are words for geological aspects that are only used about nature in the region where the language is spoken.
Like in Swedish âfjällâ refers to mountains above the tree line, exclusively in the Nordic countries. Itâs not that thatâs the name of our mountain range, itâs just what we call mountains here. I canât say that Iâm going to the Italian âfjällenâ because they do not exist. Iâd have to say âbergâ which is a more general word for mountain (which can also be used for Nordic mountains of course, although âfjällenâ is way more common and also gives a very different picture in my opinion). Another example would be âälvâ (big river) and, interestingly according to the dictionary of the Swedish Academy, a similar but not exactly equivalent feature, âflodâ, has the usage note âmainly describing a feature abroadâ. Personally I had never thought of this and to me there could be a âflodâ in Sweden but not an âälvâ abroad.
What fascinates me about this is that these are in no way features unique to here. Like how youâd think a âfjordâ has a specific name because itâs so common in Norway and so uncommon elsewhere. Both âfjällâ and âälvarâ are extremely common everywhere so why are they only used for our âfjällâ and âälvarâ?
Anyway if anyone knows if this phenomenon has a name, if it has been studied and, most importantly, if you can think of any of these in your own language Iâd love to hear about it!
I just got an email at work that started with a âhere is a polite and natural follow-up reminder in Italian:â and it really makes me wonder⌠people who use AI to write their emails, are they really so busy they donât see when they leave these things in? Or do they do it on purpose for some reason? Like if you donât write the text yourself it seems like the least you can do is at least proofread it??

It is okay to email my old supervisor. He has always supported me. He will be happy to hear from me. He will not think Iâm rude. Even if he canât help me heâll be sweet about it. Emailing him does not warrant a fight or flight response. The sooner I email the better.
Happy international mother language day to everyone and especially to those of you who speak a minority, endangered or stigmatised language!
