Hell yeah, thank you for the prompt! Nier telling Kainé “We're friends now!” is so sappy and one of my favourite things in this game. I guess it ended up being my main inspiration for Nier’s characterisation here.

Outside the gate, Kainé is waiting alongside Emil; flower in hair, swords sheathed, looking bored and indifferent like nothing in this world fazes her. Nier missed this — he missed her; her voice which can grow loud when she shouts profanities and almost soft on the rare occasion she lets a glimpse of emotion show; the fierceness with which she cuts down her enemies and the unexpected gentleness when she looks out for Emil.

Five years of searching for a way to free her from petrification, of fighting shades and failing to find a clue that could bring him closer to Yonah. When he felt the tinge of loneliness he headed towards the Aerie, to the hut in the clearing surrounded by walls of rock where he met her. There he sat and stared at the Lunar Tears — the ones which got him into a fight with her the first time around — and remembered the moments they shared together, the moments which were so full of her and yet grew shorter and shorter in his memory with each year of her absence.

He would never tell her — she would only laugh — but to him she's even more precious and beautiful than those flowers.
