Smudging is an English term and is the practice of using smoke to either cleanse a space OR using smoke to remove pests from an orchard. The practice of using smoke to cleanse a space has been used throughout Europe for a very VERY long time. You can smudge if you like darling, just don’t appropriate Native American practices or other closed practices in the process.

From what I understand, the word ‘smudging’ in particular is the appropriative part because the actual process of smudging is more involved than simply burning some herbs. While the word is English in nature, it is often misattributed to the various practices of First Nations and marketed as such. The commodification (and romanticization) of First Nations, most of which refuse to be aligned with the Pagan community for this reason, is what is at debate here.

Cleansing a space with sage, cedar, or any other herb is not the appropriative act, but conflating it with a more involved ritual is. There are other words you can use that are non-appropriative, such as ‘recan’ (from Norse) or simply calling it ‘smoke cleansing.’

Although, it is important to note that white sage is endangered from overharvesting. Be a conscious consumer.
