I could find no good references for a long time. It’s still not exactly how I pictured this exchange

“You will not write to her,” said her father sternly. “Part of being an artist–of any kind–is being able to take criticism with grace. The best thing I could do in this situation is not to respond to Her Royal Highness’s remarks.”

“So she can say whatever she wants, but you can’t? That’s not fair.”

“Perhaps not, but it’s professional. Now where did I leave those scissors? This is going into the scrapbook.”

All the same, Amarantha told herself as she rose to find the scissors, it was lucky for the Duchess of Arclis that they would likely never meet. She had more than a few remarks of her own for the humble critic.

As much as I laughed at the critique itself, this is the part I have thought about more often in the nearly year and a half since you posted it.
