In Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door I faced my arch nemesis the Smorg. I hated it as a kid because it gave me such a hard time but in this remake I beat it in one try. It was Bobbery who dealt the final blow.Â

Time for another boss battle! Feels like it wasn’t long ago we were finishing up Chapter 5, I guess this was a short one.

Smorg is a being composed entirely of small puffball creatures, also called Smorgs. Each individual Smorg is its own entity and they all move together en masse. In the Paper Mario style that looks like a really hasty copy paste job, but I wanted to draw it nice and made every single Smorg unique. This took hours! Hooray!
Back in the Gamecube days Nintendo liked to show off the technical power of their console by throwing a whole lot of units onto the screen at once. Pikmin was the big showcase of this, but it happed in Paper Mario a lot too. If you’re playing a Gamecube game and suddenly there’s a hundred tiny things running around, it’s because that was a big deal at the time. The N64 couldn’t handle that many moving parts.
