For many primates, insects are an important part of the diet, but until recently the exoskeletons of insects have been thought indigestible for most mammals.
Recent research has discovered that both mice and insectivorous bats produce ‘acidic mammalian chitinase’ (AMCase), an enzyme which digests insect exoskeletons. This enzyme is also found in modern insectivorous primates due to the presence of CHIA genes.
Today, most insectivorous primates have only one CHIA gene, with a few exceptions including the Tarsius syrichta (pictured), which has a total of five. Earlier on in the evolutionary process, many primates had multiple CHIA genes, including our own primate ancestors, meaning that insects were a key part of our ancestors’ diet.

Feathered velociraptors aren’t news, but have you ever wondered how their scales evolved into feathers in the first place?
In a recent study, scientists caused specific genes to express themselves in an alligator embryo, causing the scales of the reptile to form appendages. The appearance of these cells could be the same way in which feathers began to evolve in dinosaurs 150 million years ago, eventually leading to the evolution of the modern birds we live amongst now.

Hello! Long time following, first time asking! Needless to say, your blog is awesome. I like the fact that you are a big fan of evangelion and mushishi too. I generally like the posts you "post" so i wanted to ask you something. Is there any anime that you watched and enjoyed that wasn't very "mainstream" or super popularized? Like a hidden gem of some sort? Let me know! :)
if you liked Mushishi, i think you would also like natsume yuujinchou. they both have to deal with the supernatural, not fighting or anything but, like Ginko, trying to understand them. One outs is a very underrated anime, its psychological, but I highly recommend it. Wolf's Rain, Outlaw star, and s-cry-ed are oldies, and they arent popular on tumblr, but they're really good! Baccano is another great anime, created by the same person that made Durarara. Great Teacher Onizuka is another, and Ergo proxy and paranoia agent.
