Mulder, my brother in Christ, with the possible exception of neurodivergence nothing is preventing you too from showing interest in her personal life when neither of you are about to die…
Sort of along the lines of this post, “Small Potatoes” (s4e20) does a really good job of articulating Mulder and Scully’s loneliness. I’ve thought a lot about the scene in “One Breath” (s2e8) where Mulder confronts Cigarette Smoking Man in his apartment, and it becomes abundantly clear just how empty CSM’s life is. He’s a lonely old man who let his work become his life. He has no friends, no lovers, nothing that brings him joy except for the game. And sometimes I wonder how far off Mulder and Scully are from becoming him. They don’t know how to reach out, so they bury themselves in their work. At least work gives them an excuse to be together.
But then one Friday night, Mulder shows up with a bottle of wine. No occasion, no excuses needed. He just wants to spend time with Scully. I wonder how long Mulder and Scully had been dying for a night like that. And then the real Mulder storms in, and they’re both lonely again. It wasn’t real.
That final moment, when Mulder says “I’m no Eddie Van Blundht,” makes me so fucking sad. He really believes that he’s missing something, that Eddie Van Blundht possessed some ability to bridge the gap between them that Mulder could not. He can’t see that it wasn’t Eddie Van Blundht that charmed Scully, but him — the four years of love built up between them. All he has to do is reach out.
yikes
you know, in that episode where the shapeshifter is impersonating mulder and goes over to scully's place and opens with asking her why they don't really talk, my first thought was wtf is he talking about but then in subsequent episodes i really paid attention to how even when talking about the most personal shit, all they do is deflect, depersonalize, and intellectualize their feelings in that order. and it's just so crazy because they'll trust the other with their health, their safety, their future, their freedom, and their damn lives but can't extend that trust to their feelings. it's insanity. i'm obsessed

Some script moments from “Small Potatoes”
Moment on the couch: (you know the one.)
End of episode:
4x20: Small Potatoes
Mulder and Scully investigate the strange circumstances behind several babies in a small town being born with tails.
One lady believes she was impregnated by Luke Skywalker - oh man this scene is excellent
Tail babies are born to women with fertility issues, so they blame the doctor at first
Mulder pulls down Eddie's pants to show Scully the tail?? Lmao
"Hey Scully, should we be picking out china patterns or what?"
Eddie can shapeshift, he changes into Mulder and goes home in his place!!!
Ah, yes, the scene that makes me both cringe and go absolutely feral... Eddie "Mulder" almost kisses Scully as real Mulder busts in
Eddie realizes that despite Mulder's incredibly good looks, he's kind of a huge loser lol
Score: 8/10
Watch it? Yes, although I feel a sort of love-hate relationship towards this one. The writers were so cruel for this. Scully drinking wine, opening up, talking about her childhood, and all of that was to Eddie?? Mulder, my guy, don't you see how down she is?! But it is such a funny episode, I still really enjoy it.
Having a very unique experience watching X-Files for the first time as a life-long Supernatural enjoyer. The amount of storylines, actors writers and directors they share is insane! I swear I’m the Leonardo DiCaprio pointing meme every five minutes with the damn show. Here’s a couple of my favorite similarities so far.
1. X-Files’ fake smoking alien walked so Supernatural’s fake alien dancing to Lady in Red could run let’s be real.
2. The vibes of shapeshifters and shapeshifter episodes being so vastly different is also hilarious to me.
SPN’s shapeshifters are gory and gruesome and scary! They’re a genuine threat and are for a very long time on the show! I mean that cold open for Skin STILL freaks me out because it’s so visceral and creepy:
Meanwhile X-Files with their shapeshifter:
Oh and my other favorite thing from that episode…
I could write a whole ass book on their similarities and differences and why I love both but for different reasons. I might add to this post if I come across another thing I found funny💕🛸
