The glass was clear and shiny, but it felt like a brick wall between Anthony and the small creature that rested behind it. He could barely see the baby girl behind another baby's bed. He swiped his pass that reassured he was allowed to go in, the door unlocking so he could open it. His heart made a noticeable thump in his chest and he stopped by the baby's bed. He was about to ask if he could hold it, afraid. He was thinking that he shouldn't have to ask to hold the baby -- his baby -- but as the nurse watching him gave a smile and walked past he knew he could without asking. His baby. The thought brought a smile to his face.
Warmth spread through his body steadily as he lifted his baby out of its bed. He held it the way Sloane had been teaching him. She constantly reminded him that he had to keep the head up, and although he consistently told her that he knew how, standing here now he felt like he knew nothing. He was nervous and his hands were shaking. He knew he needed to calm down. This was going to become a daily thing now. Well, more like a 24/7 thing. Even though he needed to stop being nervous, he told himself he had all right to be. He was just afraid of hurting the baby. He grinned and ran his fingers across the back of her cheeks. "La mia bella ragazza, Corin," he spoke to her in a hushed voice, breathy. She was so soft and so small.
Thinking about the fact that he and Sloane created a beautiful baby, created human life, was an amazement to him. Seeing it was enough to make his heart jump. It took his breath away. Obviously he understood the basics, he knew how it happened and the thing as a whole was a simple enough concept. It was just knowing that there was another piece of him in the world now. One that he made with the woman he loved the most. Well, one of the women I love the most now, he thought, a smile painted on his face as he stared down at Corin.
Of course not a "woman" yet, but someday she would be. That made him frown at her, "You're not allowed to grow up on me, bambina." Corin yawned and opened her eyes after that and he smiled brighter than he had been earlier. The baby girl's eyes were a grayish blue, and he remembered being told that melanin wasn't fully deposited in babies eyes and that's why hers would be blue/gray at first. Babies are complicated. He rolled his eyes at her playfully and kissed her nose.
The baby looked a lot like Sloane, which aided in his falling in love with her so quickly. At the same time that she resembled Sloane, he could see parts of him in her and it made his heart melt. She was literally part of him. She had his nose, and he kind of wished that she'd fair out to have his dark but pale green eyes. It was hard to tell all the similarities now, because she was still, obviously, growing into herself. The eyes, the hair, her hands, etc, were all traits to be determined a bit later. He could tell she'd have Sloane's curls instead of his waves, the curl that formed next to her ear informed him of Sloane's beautiful curls. She did have his white-blonde hair though. He thinks. It was really light, but there was a possibility of it growing out darker. It made him run his fingers over her hair, aware of her soft spot at the top of her head, making the baby close her eyes again.
"Il mio bambina, bambina bellissima," he murmured. He already loved her so much and he didn't want to ever let her out of his arms. She was their baby, and it was hard to wrap his mind around it all. Although it was simple, he just couldn't believe it.
Corin opened her sky-colored irises, staring up at him with an innocent expression on her face. "Hi, baby. Corin Jane. Corin Jane Trent." He wanted to say her name over and over again, just to remind himself that she was his, his and Sloane's, but as he smiled at the girl, the nurse came by, notifying him that the baby needed her thorough physical now. After begrudgingly giving his baby to the nurse, he stepped out of the room, knowing that he needed to tend to Sloane as well. He'd see their baby again soon, and next time, with his wife.
