Sleeptalker, Part 4
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Fandom: Final Fantasy XIV
Ship: Guydelot/Sanson
Guydelot wakes abruptly in the middle of the night, rattled by a nightmare - the same nightmare that's haunted him since that awful moment in Castrum Oriens - and for one dizzy, sickening moment, he fears he dreamed it all. The rescue, bringing Sanson home, taking him safe and sound to bed; all just a sweet fantasy⌠but no, here he is.
Here he is, asleep in Guydelot's arms, right where he belongs. Here he is, murmuring quietly into the familiar shadows of their room, like it all never even happened.
Here he is.
With his heart still galloping in his chest, Guydelot curls tighter against Sanson's back, burying his face in his lover's dark hair, breathing him in. Part of him longs to wake Sanson, only to talk, only for the reassurance of his voice here in the dark - the comfort of knowing they did find him, they did bring him safely home, with only a few minor wounds to show for it. But no, gods know Sanson needs the rest, and what Guydelot meant to tell him to excuse rousing him from much-needed sleep, the restless bard couldn't begin to guess. The truth?
Today I got a taste of what it might be like to lose you, and Sanson? It tastes like poison. I reckon it'd kill me.
The way the earth dropped out under his feet when Vorsaile said the Adders meant to throw Sanson away⌠gods, they might as well have driven a spear right through him, too! There'd been a gaping, bleeding wound in Guydelot's life from the moment Sanson was torn from it, and it threatened to bleed him dry when he thought, for a moment, all hope was lost. A mad, wild moment when he envisioned storming the Addersâ Nest alongside the Warrior of Light, tearing the place apart until he wrung out of those wretched cowardly bastards just where Nourvalâd taken Sanson, and then heâd get Sanson back himself or - more likely - get them both killed trying. Anything, anything but standing back and doing nothing. Anything but throwing Sansonâs life away.
I love you, he thinks, as his pulse settles at last. Gods save me, but I love you, Sanson the Stiff. Heâd known, of course. Heâs known that for a long time now, though theyâve never quite put the words to it - as though never saying it out loud could keep it from meaning too much, could keep it from being too real, could keep it at a safe and manageable distance. Theyâve never needed the words. They donât need them now. But that doesnât stop the words from rattling around in Guydelotâs head, clashing hard against I couldâve lost you today and Sanson, they wouldâve had to kill me, too.
Slowly, slowly, he realizes the tone of Sansonâs sleeptalking has changed: sharper, more agitated. The body in his arms is tense, as though-
âHey.â Guydelot shifts, shaking Sanson gently, carefully, mindful both of his wounds and the fear and uncertainty that accompany waking suddenly from a nightmare. âHey-â
Sanson jerks awake, breathing hard, and after a moment to orient himself, sits up. âGuydelot?â
âRight here, Chief.â Stretching, Guydelot reaches to light the lamp on the nightstand, illuminating the room, chasing away the shadows. Sanson sits in silence, looking around the room as though reacquainting himself with it - or perhaps as though convincing himself it is real, as unconvinced heâs been saved as Guydelot is. He lets out a long, slow breath, drawing his knees up and lowering his forehead to rest against them.
Another long silence stretches between them before Sanson speaks again, muffled. âI suppose I woke you?â
âNah.â As casually as he can, Guydelot rubs Sansonâs back, hoping to soothe away the last of the nightmareâs terrors - Sansonâs and his own. âI couldnât sleep.â
Sanson peers over his shoulder, skeptical. âCouldnât sleep?â
âMustâve been something I ate.â
It makes Sanson smile⌠until a moment later, when his expression crumples into misery again, verging on tears. âIâm fine,â he mutters. âGods, Iâm fine. I donât know why IâŚâ He trails off, burying his face in his hands, trembling ever-so-slightly.
âHere, you know what youâve been through.â Guydelot sits up, winding his arms around Sanson, pulling him close, willing it all to fade away. âDonât beat yourself up. Youâre bruised enough, eh?â
It earns him a groan, somewhere between rueful amusement and genuine mortification. âYouâre being sweet,â Sanson says, leaning into him. âI must look truly wretched.â
Guydelot lays them both back down, tucking Sanson into his side. Safe and warm. Right where he belongs. âIâll be back to being a pain in the arse tomorrow. Promise.â
âOnly if you promise.â
Smiling, Guydelot reaches to extinguish the lamp, but Sanson stops him. âLeave it. Please. I needâŚâ Whatever he means to say, he canât quite find the right words. He stops, looks around the room once more, and shakes his head. Guydelot understands: he needs to see this room, this sanctuary, when he wakes. âPlease.â
âSure.â Settling back down, Guydelot tugs playfully at a lock of Sansonâs hair. âAnything else?â
Very, very quietly, Sanson asks, âWill you sing for me?â
âSure, Chief. What do you wanna hear?â
Sansonâs eyes close. âYou.â
