Sleep Update
Because I’ve documented the strugs so far so I feel as though it’s only fair to keep everyone updated. :P
Sooooo after our sleep reset and our night where we were up for an hour putting the kid back in his bed continuously, I literally spent all day praying that we wouldn’t have a repeat but reminding myself that we *had* let him sleep with us three nights in a row so whatever I was dealing with now was an undoing of that mini-habit/expectation we had created in our exhaustion and loss of what to do.
That night he woke up at 12:30 and it only took 2 resets for him to stay tucked into his bed but we repeated that pattern every 2 hours until 6:30am when I finally considered it “early” enough to just put him into bed with us because that’s been our habit since quarantine. He wakes up, I let him into our room and we snuggle and he nurses on and off (his only nursing time of the day) and then we finally get up. It wasn’t ideal but at least I got some more sleep and it wasn’t an hour straight of awake time at 2:45 in the morning.
Last night he went down on the first try, but he woke up at 12:30 crying. Jake was getting up to use the restroom and heard him and nudged me and said I needed to check the monitor to make sure he wasn’t out of bed. I rolled over and looked and while he was up crying he managed to settle himself and go back to sleep. He was quiet for the rest of the night until 6:30. He woke up at 6:30 crying again-I heard him and rolled over and watched the monitor. He was out of his bed and clearly at the door but I waited. The crying wasn’t extreme or panicked sounding and he’d done so well and I wanted to see if he would get back into his bed on his own or not. Within minutes he actually came back into the frame of the camera and got back into his bed and slept for another hour independently.
Thanks to @growingracealways mentioning a “ready to wake” alarm clock-we got the Hatch Baby specifically for this reason. I hadn’t introduced the color change feature yet because I thought he was too little for it but our recent situation seemed like an opportune moment to attempt to present it. So this evening before we read books we practiced and essentially played red light, green light with the hatch and when the orange light was on (that’s the setting we ALWAYS use) it meant bed time so he’d get in bed and “pretend” to sleep and when the green light clicked on he’d get out of bed and come give me a high 5. When he gets a little bit older once he understands the concept better we’ll introduce acceptable activities to do when the light is green before Mom and Dad come to get him out of his room like getting up and playing with his blocks in his room or reading but he’s nottttt quite there just yet I don’t think. Anyway-he really seemed to understand the concept of green light means awake/get up and orange light means sleep. I don’t anticipate it to work right away but I’m hoping with some practice he’ll get it and that will help him understand better when he wakes up in the middle of the night what he’s supposed to do. Here’s to hoping everything works out tonight! I’m very happy with the progress we’ve made but I know just as well as any parent that the minute you get cocky about routine or schedules everything changes and the rug is ripped out from underneath you.
