While the Zephram Cochrane story in First Contact is great, and I like Star Trek Enterprise more than some, I do miss the stage in the development of the lore when Star Trek had a pre-FTL space exploration era like classic sci-fi tended to, like in Buck Rogers, Forbidden Planet, Cardβs Ender series, Nivenβs Known Space, or Le Guinβs Hainish Cycle.
Granted, maybe it still happened, and a bussard ramscoop-powered sleeper ship was out encountering the people of Alpha Centauri at the same time WWIII was raging back on Earth.

A sleeper ship was a late 20th to early 21st century Earth space vessel in which the crew could be placed into suspended animation for all or part of the journey.
