Twosday Tuesday! Let's Talk About... ~ SLAYER - HELL AWAITS (1985) ~ SLAYER - HAUNTING THE CHAPEL (1984) This combo is an important one for the band's evolution. It is the transition many overlook. Hell Awaits is an absolute classic on all accounts. It features the band as a well oiled machine and ready to attack. It's no surprise it receives high praise among the thrash masses. Rightly so and, for many, it was our introduction to the band. What is often left behind is the importance of the Haunting the Chapel EP. It contains what would become the band's signature sound as they moved forward. Both Captor of Sin and Chemical Warfare first appear here and were played pretty consistently in the bands live career afterward. Haunting is as close as we can get to being in the room during the early years when the gates opened for the band. Where Show No Mercy is a high speed introduction to Slayer, Haunting is a live action transformation into the double bass driven speed metal to come within Hell Awaits. It's one of the things I like most about that EP. It is pretty raw but furious. Follow that up with Hell Awaits and the rest in history. Hell Awaits lands on Bobby's Essential Listening list, btw!
