Washdown Cages Part 9: FRP Floor

  To keep the animals out of their own bodily fluids, the floor must be permeable. The perfect material for this is slatted Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP). This material won’t rot, doesn’t sink heat like metal, and can bear a lot of weight. 

  I bought these two standard over-sized pieces from McMaster-Carr. I cut the length and width to size with a standard circular saw and blade (go slow to avoid fraying the embedded fibers). Don’t forget to buy the clear epoxy spray that is used to reseal the cut ends of the fiberglass, if you don’t do this step the cut ends can soak liquids. 

  The picture showing the flat bar supports is inaccurate. A test fit of the floor showed a lot of sagging, so I had to move the flat bars to the edges and weld them to the square tube side rails. In hindsight, that should have been where I put them in the first place. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a good picture after the move,

Poolside deck seems to float, thanks to rocks that are partially embedded in concrete to camouflage piers and footings. Judiciously arranged throughout garden are more rocks, adding variety to yard’s linear look.
