The first time I dumpster dived was in London as a small child with my Mother. They were of course called “skips” not dumpsters. I don’t remember what we got, but I do know she had an affinity for digging through the trash. She also used to take us to a landfill of sorts in the UK, where we would dig for antique colored bottles that she put up in the house as decorative art. When I was a teen and learned how to dive for bagels, bread and behind Frito Lay from punks in Rapid City SD, I felt like the world had opened up. It gave me a full body exhilaration when I jumped inside a dumpster and found something rad. A treasure hunt. Gathering. Recycling. A sense of ethical pride in rescuing what was cast aside, as well as being stoked to get something without spending money. It’s how I got most of my admittedly terrible record collection and when @mattyxboi and I lived together it’s how we furnished our house. People get in trouble with the law for doing it in some places. It’s not ok to throw a celebratory get down in the trash. Its understandable on one hand. It can be dangerous. There’s hazardous shit in dumpsters. People die dumpster diving. Sometimes dumpsters get picked up by trucks with people inside them. It’s no joke. And. We live in a wasteful, capitalist culture that revels in disposability and denies access to resources with locked dumpsters. It’s one of those complicated things like a lot of social issues. I’m still a shameless dumpster diver. I don’t need to do it for survival currently. I dive for art supplies because they’re too expensive, and I feel like I can have a small environmental impact by recycling materials out of the trash for my art. I occasionally stretch my own canvas, but I always feel better about my work when I’ve dragged something home from the trash or bought materials from my scrounge friend in Skid Row.
