How intelligent are the merpeople? Do they have a civilization or are they more "primitive" and nomadic? Something comparable to aquatic cavemen at least?
They're pretty smart! They have their own 'language' even if it's mostly chirping, chattering, squeaking, whistling, so on and so forth. A lot of that language is accentuated with 'Body Language' for lack of a better term. They dance. Like bees. And also, bonus points, sing. (Though they don't do the fairytale singing to lure people into the ocean thing, that's just a myth). However, their vocal structure doesn't support human language very well, so it's been very difficult for Leon to figure out speaking. There's a bit of dissonance with how things are explained in their mer language as opposed to human languages. As for their social structures and stuff- that's complicated! It also depends on the species. Leon's pod migrates periodically until their matriarch chooses to settle down. They share matriarchalism with the rest of 'merkind', at least. Just like all other species, they also have very basic tools. Pretty much smashing stuff on rocks and digging dens is the extent of their tool use, sometimes stacking rocks on territory borders. No clothes, no jewelry, no organized food production, no craft, no structure building (outside just digging/packing sediment), no advanced tools or weapons (save for their own teeth, claws and tails!), no overarching society or justice system, no written language of any kind. The main extent of their organization is around matriarchal social structures and mating practices!
