Things You Hear as a Psychology Major
Career Peer Kaitlyn Routh explores the common misconceptions and pet peeves Psychology Majors often face! Can you relate?
“What are you going to do with that?”
Most of the time this is asked out of genuine interest, but other times it can sound downright condescending. I may or may not know now what I want to do, and that’s fine. Maybe I do, and that’s fine too. Psychology and sociology majors -- Never feel insecure telling people what you study. Ultimately, you chose it for a reason, so be proud!
“Can you diagnose me?”
Having taken a couple of psychology courses doesn’t really qualify me to do this, even if I might have a few things to say!
“Are you going to be a social worker/psychologist?”
Maybe some of us want to, but psychology and sociology are incredibly extensive fields of study that can prepare us for a variety of career opportunities. The possibilities are truly endless!
“Is sociology the same as psychology?”
They are certainly related in some ways. Psychology is the study of the individual human person, their behavior and mind. Sociology can be described as the study of the structures, institutions, and development of society as a whole. While they are separate disciplines, I like to think you can’t fully appreciate one without the other.
“That’s an easy major.”
This is our biggest pet peeve. Perhaps you think so, but as a junior sociology major, I have a total number of 12 papers to write this semester. It’s been hard trying to manage that with extracurricular activities and making time for friends and family. All we ask is that you respect our field of study.
“Freud!”
Please don’t mention that name… I assure you that we’re all sick of hearing about him!
“Wow, psychology/sociology is really interesting!”
Thank you, we think so too!
