I discovered who Sixto Rodriguez was from one of my Media Arts classes. I watched a documentary called Searching for Sugar Man, and I was blown away by Sixto Rodriguez's story that I continue to do my own research while I listened to his music and lyrics. This is an extraordinary documentary of a musician who recorded two albums in the late sixties in Detroit. After being dropped from his record label in 1970's.This forced him to go into complete silence and live in his own enigma world.Giving up his passion for music and turning too construction as a means to support his family.
His record producers Dennis Coffey, Mike Theodore, and music business veteran Clarence Avant (who also produced the greats of Motown) said Sixto Rodriguez was one of the best they had ever heard. They ranked him greater than Bob Dylan. But for whatever reason, the early 70’s the American public did not connect to Sixto Rodriguez who is (Mexican Descent) A mist of darkness surrounded him and success evaded him. Just when he was about to give up his passion for music, a young American woman shared his album with friends in South Africa. What happened next should be a reminder to us all. Sixto Díaz Rodríguez work became extremely successful and influential in South Africa; although, he was mistakenly rumored in that country to have committed suicide. In the 1990s, determined South African fans managed to seek out and contact him, which led to an unexpected revival of his musical career. His story Searching for Sugar Man is a 2012 Swedish-British- Finnish documentary film about a South African cultural anomaly, directed and written by Malik Bendjelloul, which tells details efforts in the late 1990s of two Cape Twon fans, Stephen "Sugar" Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out whether the rumors were true about Sixto Rodriguez, and in hopes to find him.
