Lurking At The Last Minute Zine Exhibition
Dope Zines, A Bar, Rad People, A Third-Floor Venue and Skate Videos. What More Could You Ask For?
On the third of December 2016 (exactly a year after the JOZI DAYS premier), four guys got together to showcase their respective projects. Zines from T-Kay Modise, Mike Chinner and Brendan Dyamond and a video premier from Homegrwn’s Wandile Msomi were the subject of the night.
Friends, family, artists, skate crews and passers-by from across the city came in full force to show their support. The event was held at The House Of Marvels. The venue was on the third and highest floor of a building in the Eastern Johannesburg CBD, near Troyeville. Those who found their way through the maze of small industrial roads found a wide open venue boasting a good view of the city center. Topped with paid bar and an impromptu dance floor, it was the perfect venue to showcase the amazing projects these guys had created.

What is your Zine about and how was the process of making it?
T-kay: Well my Zine was my first project so I just wanted to show and share my experiences with people. Telling a story of what really goes down on missions haha!. Process of making the zine was pretty hectic because I had to use my own budget and figure out how to put it together.. but it kinda worked out in the end
Chinner: The zine documented a trip I took to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia earlier this year to volunteer to document and build the first skatepark in Ethiopia with several volunteers from all over the world. The photographs are basically just what happened on the build site and in the streets over a 3 week period in Addis. I’ve made one DIY style zine before, but I wanted this one to be done to the best of my ability, so I took to adobe InDesign to lay out and develop things. I had never used the program before, so the whole project was a good learning curve for me. It took me about a month of going through photos and deciding what was best, most fitting, and how things factored into the layout I’d envisioned; and then just making it happen. I took inspiration from other local zines for the layout ideas and just kinda went from there. After about another month of staring at it and debating whether it was complete or not, I kinda just said fuck it and signed off on it. I’m stoked on how it came out, though.
Brendan: Index is something Jonathan Pinkhard and myself sort of birthed last year with the Colloquial zine, so it was time for some new work. This zine is a (bro)collaboration of various illustrations made my myself and a few of the bros that I know have put in work with illustration. The process was literally last minute, hitting up the dudes, getting everybody's work together and finishing up my own, a couple of late nights there.

Where can people see or buy your zine?
T-Kay: Anyone who's down to buy or see my Zine can hit me up on Facebook or something!!
Chinner: I haven’t really made a plan to properly sell the zines in South Africa. I sold a couple at the exhibition and I left a few with some friends. If you want one, ask around, and you can maybe get your hands on one. I might also put up a Webstore within the next few months to sell them, we’ll see. If you get ahold of one, the profits benefit a DIY skatepark build in Nepal in 2017.
Brendan: You can see some of the work in the zine on a few of the dude's IG accounts, but as for the zine itself, you might have to find a bro that has one to see the full thing. Anyone looking to buy a copy can hit me up directly @kiff_oke on IG. They go for R80 and I might throw in something special.
“BWOI!”
“Jay and Silent Bob Go To The Last Minute Zine Exhibition...2!”
“Hold up, Lemmie Jus’ Stunt Real quick”
“Get that flash out my face!”
“You see, the interesting thing about Quantum Physics is how Protons...”
Brian Stays Shinin’
Jarryd Stays Lit
Any future plans?
T-Kay: Future plans? I don’t know. Probably work on more projects and just share my photos with the world.
Chinner: My future plans just include more of what I love to do - skateboarding, photography, and travel. I might teach English in Vietnam or Thailand next year so I’m looking forward to the possibility of that. All I really want to do in life right now is skateboard and document skateboarding.
Brendan: Definitely hyped to continue making zines and working on illustrations, there's definitely something big in the mix. I'm also hyped to take Index to further heights and see where that may lead.
“Whaa?”

The Pinky and The Jay.
Wandile passing on the torch to a new-gen Jozi. “You guys got this!”
“Shhhh...It’s starting”
T-Kay: Just want to thank everyone who came through and showed some love.
Chinner: Thanks to everyone that came out to the exhibition and supported!.
Brendan: Wanna show love to everybody that put in work for the zine, Lwando Gwili, Chris Staub, Kevin Mbuyamba and Mooki Mooks - you should halla at them about prints. Also wanna show love to the homies who made the night happen - Chinner, Tkay and Wandile. Shout out to all the fam that made the night so special. Shout out to you guys for the questions/re-cap. Vé.G be the Squad!
“The Video was SIIIIIICK!!!”
“LUH U GUYS!”
TIME TO TRAP!
For an event organized at the last minute, it was definitely one to remember. No use in saying you wish you were there because you weren't. Don't miss the next one!. Also be sure to check out Homegrwn Media’s CultureOne Video on our YouTube Channel in the days to come!.
Special thanks to The House Of Marvels, T-kay Modise, Brendan Dyamond, Mike Chinner and Wandile Msomi.
