On twitter I recently saw a new bill titled SISEA that would make it infinitely harder to post nsfw content on the US internet. How would AO3 and the OTW as a whole be affected by this if it passed?
Hello!
Thank you for reaching out!
At this time, the SISEA bill is very early in the Senate process. We predict that, because of its massive potential impact on large social media companies and user privacy, it will receive heavy opposition, especially from tech companies and information privacy advocates, although of course it has its supporters in those camps as well. As for its impact on fanworks, it is difficult to predict how it will be interpreted. It is explicitly aimed at images of real people. It could, therefore, have an impact on sites that host real-person-fanart, but is unlikely to have an impact on other areas of fanwork. How realistic a piece of fanart would have to be to be swept within it is a matter of interpretation. It would not have any impact on the AO3, which does not host images.
For now, continue to have fun creating!

PLEASE PLEASE help stop this bill which will likely cause all social media to ban porn. Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/acvalens/status/1340338322326106112?s=20

These are the Senators on the "Commerce, Science, and Transporation Committee. It is this committee that has introduced the bill #SISEA - Stop Internet Sexual Exploitation Act.These are the senators that are directly responsible for the legislation in question. Let them know how you feel. Let your voices be heard!
Something important about SISEA, the terrifying anti-sex-worker bill that would end sex work on the internet as we know it and make sex workers lives a thousand times worse, there’s a very specific standing committee that’s introducing it to the larger legislative body.
And, while IDK how receptive they might be to the well documented problems with the bill (@afloweroutofstone could probably say more certainly than me), if they’re not one of the main sponsors of the bill I think it’s our duty if they represent our state to tell them why it needs to die and why they’re going to be flat on their ass on the streets come the next election if they pass it.
So, tomorrow, if any of the Senators on that list represent your state, for the love of god call them and tell them to kill that bill.
Here’s a letter template I’ve made for an important issue:
Hello,
I am writing to express my opposition to the pending SISEA bill, S.5054. As written, it does not address the root causes of sexual abuse and trafficking, and chills freedom of speech on the internet - which is already in a molten state of unclear precedents. This bill especially harms sex workers and LGBT people, and the bureaucracy necessary to enforce it is completely beyond the resources of the vast majority of websites. I urge you to vote against it and in favor of truly effective ways of ending trafficking and abuse.
Thank you,

Really fucking bizarre going through a search for SISEA and seeing all these 1800s prudes acting like anyone who engages with sex or porn is the scum of the earth. Mind your own business?? Sure the intent of the law was to crack down on abusive practices but the reality is that it destroys nsfw content altogether. You dont amputate a leg to fix a broken bone. Humans have sex. We're mammals. Get over it.
The SISEA Bill
Well, we finally arrive at 2021, but those adult actors and artists and those that watch, look, and download at their work, even before the pandemic, now face a issue when sensor Ben Sasse and sensor Jeff Merkley offer the Stop Internet Sexual Exploitation Act (SISEA). This bill would require platforms hosting pornography to verify the idneity of users who upload videos, and require a signed consent form from every individual appearing in the video. While it could stop the spread of rape, abuse, and child exploitation online as Jeff Merkley hoped, SISEA would wreck all those porn artists’ career, as well take away parts of our freedom just to save the youth of America. Please Americans, think about what you are voting for and/or protesting against.
If you think the latest round of internet censorship doesn’t affect you, think again. Social media TOS changes & mass deletions, Visa/MasterCard halting services on “the most popular tube site for grownups I can’t mention here for fear of violating terms of service,” and Section 230 being wrapped up in our COVID relief bills affect not only s3x censorship but everyone who uses the internet. What happens when s3xual assault survivors can’t easily search for resources because the word “s3x” is no longer permitted on social media? How do LGBTQ+ youth with no one to turn to find support when activists & educators are being silenced? How do we create change if we’re not allowed to organize social movements on social media? Why is the US government attacking legal “grown-up work” sites like “rhymes with ‘lonely hams’”–the one income source so many marginalized people have turned to during the pandemic? On ep 151 of @AmericanSexPodcast, you’ll learn how all these issues are interrelated and have unsuspecting dark origins.
