Months before...
The set was already alive in that chaotic, barely-contained way that only happened when a production was running on limited time and too many expectations.
Cables snaked across the floor, lighting rigs hummed overhead, and somewhere in the background, the faint instrumental of “Please Please Please” looped for what had to be the hundredth time that morning. People moved quickly—assistants with clipboards, stylists carrying racks of clothes, makeup artists rushing back and forth—everyone operating on the same tight, invisible clock.
Right in the middle of it Carla stood with the director, arms crossed, listening intently while nodding every now and then, her expression focused but already slightly strained.
Meredith spotted her from across the set and immediately felt her stomach twist.
She tightened her grip on the folder in her hands, exhaling slowly as she started walking toward them, weaving through crew members and equipment. Each step felt heavier than the last, like maybe if she delayed it long enough, the problem would somehow fix itself.
It wouldn’t.
Of course it wouldn’t.
By the time she reached them, Carla glanced up first.
—What is it?— she asked, reading Meredith instantly.
No small talk.
No buffer.
Meredith swallowed.
—Can I... uh… can I talk to you for a second?—
Carla’s expression shifted, something more alert now. She gave a quick nod to the director.
—Give me a minute.—
They stepped slightly to the side, just far enough to have a conversation without being overheard.
Meredith hesitated.
Then just said it.
—He canceled.—
Carla blinked.
—What?—
—The male lead,— Meredith clarified, her voice dropping slightly. —He’s sick. Fever, apparently. His team just called.—
Silence.
A beat.
—You’re joking.—
—No.—
Carla let out a sharp breath, one hand coming up to press against her forehead.
—No, no, no, this can’t be happening today.—
—That’s what I said,— Meredith muttered.
Carla started pacing immediately, her mind visibly racing.
—We don’t have time for this. We’re already behind. Amelie only has today and tomorrow before she leaves for New York, we can’t reschedule, we can’t push—
—We know,— Meredith nodded quickly. —That’s why I came straight to you.—
—We need a replacement,— Carla said, more to herself than to Meredith. —Someone available. Someone who can act. Someone who...—
Her words cut off abruptly.
A loud crash echoed from the catering table across the set.
Both women turned at the same time.
And there he was.
Lando Norris
Standing frozen in place.
A plate in his hands.
Or what was left of it.
Half the food had slid right off and onto the table… and the floor.
A drink had tipped over.
Something glass had very clearly not survived the fall.
Lando looked at the mess.
Then at the catering staff.
Then back at the mess.
—Oh... shit,— he said quickly. —I’m so sorry, I didn’t... I’ll pay for it, I swear, I’ve got it, whatever it is—
He looked genuinely panicked, like he’d just broken something priceless instead of knocking over lunch.
Meredith blinked.
Then, very slowly, she turned her head toward Carla and smiled.
Carla saw it immediately.
—No.—
Meredith didn’t even speak yet.
—No,— Carla repeated, firmer this time, already shaking her head.
—Just listen—
—Absolutely not.—
—Carla—
—Meredith, no. He’s not an actor.—
—He doesn’t have to be,— Meredith shot back quickly. —It’s a music video, not a full-length film.—
Carla exhaled sharply, glancing back toward Lando, who was now awkwardly trying to help clean up the mess he’d made, still apologizing under his breath.
—This is insane.—
—This is the only option,— Meredith pressed. —We don’t have time to cast someone else, do a chemistry test, get approvals, we’re already running late.—
Carla crossed her arms.
—And you think throwing him in front of a camera is the solution?—
—Yes.—
—Why?—
Meredith raised an eyebrow.
—Because it’s him.—
Carla didn’t respond.
But she didn’t look away either.
Meredith leaned in slightly, lowering her voice.
—We don’t need to test chemistry,— she added pointedly. —They already have it.—
That landed.
Carla’s jaw tightened slightly.
Because she knew.
Everyone did.
Slowly, reluctantly, she looked back at Lando again.
He had given up on fixing the situation and was now just… eating.
Like nothing had happened.
Fork in hand.
Completely unbothered.
Until... he felt it.
That feeling of being watched.
He looked up.
And locked eyes with them.
Both of them.
Staring.
Directly at him.
Lando frowned slightly, chewing as he pointed vaguely at himself.
—What?—
Carla sighed.
Long.
Tired.
Like she was about to make a decision she was going to regret.
She turned back to Meredith.
—If this goes wrong, it’s on you.—
Meredith grinned.
—Deal.—
Carla closed her eyes briefly.
Then waved a hand.
—Go. Get him ready.—
That was all Meredith needed.
She clapped her hands once, unable to hide her excitement.
—Perfect.—
Before Carla could change her mind, Meredith was already moving—quick, determined steps straight toward Lando.
He barely had time to react.
—Hey, Meredith?— he started, confused.
Too late.
She grabbed the front of his shirt.
—You’re coming with me.—
—What? Why—
—No time.—
—For what—
—You’ll see.—
And just like that, she dragged a very confused, half-fed Lando Norris across the set toward the dressing rooms leaving behind a trail of questions, spilled food… and a decision that was about to change the entire music video.

--------------
The Los Angeles morning carried that deceptive kind of cold—the one that didn’t look like it should bite, sunlight already spilling over the set in golden streaks, but still sharp enough to sink into your skin if you stood still for too long.
Amelie felt it immediately the second she stepped out of the trailer.
Wrapped in a ridiculously oversized, fluorescent yellow coat, she pulled it tighter around herself, shoulders instinctively curling inward as she exhaled a small cloud of breath. The set in front of her was already in motion—crew members adjusting reflectors, someone yelling about lighting angles, a stylist rushing past with a last-minute accessory—but for a second, she just stood there, taking it all in.
Then her eyes started searching.
Automatically.
Without even thinking about it.
Lando.
He had left hours ago—something about grabbing food—and then… nothing. No message. No call. No sign of him coming back.
She frowned slightly, scanning the edges of the set, the clusters of people, the trailers, the catering area.
Nothing.
Her chest tightened just a little, something between confusion and mild annoyance settling in.
—Of course,— she muttered under her breath, starting to walk.
She forced herself to focus, boots crunching lightly against the pavement as she made her way toward the vintage car parked under carefully positioned lights. It was beautiful in that worn, cinematic way—faded paint, chrome details catching the morning sun—placed perfectly in front of the building that had been dressed up to look like a jail.
Everything exactly how the director wanted it.
Amelie adjusted the coat again, trying not to think about the cold, about the way it seeped through the fabric anyway, about the fact that she was about to stand still for who knew how many takes.
Professional.
Focused.
She stepped onto her mark, positioning herself just like they had shown her—leaning slightly against the car, one hand resting casually against the metal, gaze forward but soft.
Waiting.
The chatter around her dimmed slightly.
The director’s voice cut through.
—Alright, quiet on set!—
Amelie inhaled slowly, settling into the moment.
—And… action!—
The heavy door of the “jail” behind her creaked open.
Right on cue.
She didn’t turn immediately—that wasn’t the direction. She was supposed to feel it, sense it, let the moment build before reacting.
So she did.
Footsteps.
Measured.
Confident.
Approaching.
Then she turned and everything broke.
Because it wasn’t the actor.
It wasn’t the carefully cast, approved, scheduled male lead that had been planned for this exact moment.
It was Lando.
Dressed entirely in black, like he had just stepped out of a completely different story. Dark shirt, dark pants, boots scuffed just enough to look intentional—and his hands… slightly marked, like he’d actually been through something.
And the worst part?
He was doing it seriously.
Actually acting.
Walking out of that door like he’d just been released, shoulders loose but purposeful, gaze fixed ahead like he belonged there.
Like this had always been the plan.
Amelie stared.
Tried—really tried—to keep it together.
To stay in character.
To pretend this was normal.
But the second he got close enough for her to fully see his face, the way his lips twitched, like he knew exactly what he was doing to her, she lost it.
A laugh slipped out.
Then another.
And just like that, she broke completely, doubling over slightly as she tried to cover her mouth.
—Cut!— someone called faintly in the background, but it didn’t matter anymore.
Because Lando was already laughing too.
The serious façade dropped instantly, replaced by that familiar, boyish grin as he stopped right in front of her.
—Hi,— he said, like this was the most normal thing in the world.
Amelie shook her head, still laughing, eyes wide with disbelief.
—What are you doing here?!—
—Acting,— he replied, completely straight-faced for half a second.
She shoved his arm lightly.
—I’m serious!—
—I am too!—
She stared at him.
—Lando.—
He laughed again, running a hand through his hair.
—Okay, okay, Meredith kidnapped me.—
Amelie blinked.
—What?
—Apparently your guy dropped out,— he explained, gesturing vaguely behind him. —And I was… conveniently available.—
Her eyebrows shot up.
—Conveniently?—
—Yeah,— he smirked. —Wrong place, wrong time.—
She narrowed her eyes slightly, trying to piece it together.
—So they just… threw you in?—
—Pretty much.—
She let out a breath, shaking her head again in disbelief.
—This is insane.—
—You’re welcome.—
She scoffed, but there was no bite to it.
—You disappeared for hours and came back as my co-star.—
—Big upgrade, I know.—
Amelie rolled her eyes, but the smile on her face gave her away completely.
—You’re unbelievable.—
He stepped closer then, just slightly, enough to close the space between them.
The laughter softened.
The noise of the set faded again.
—Missed you,— he murmured.
Her expression shifted instantly, something softer, warmer.
—You were gone for, like, two hours.—
—Still counts.—
She huffed a quiet laugh.
—Idiot.—
He didn’t argue.
Instead, he leaned in, pressing a soft, quick kiss to her lips—gentle, familiar, grounding.
Amelie melted into it for just a second before pulling back, glancing around instinctively.
—We’re on set,— she whispered.
—Yeah,— he nodded. —And?—
She shook her head, smiling despite herself.
—You’re impossible.—
He grinned.
—And yet, here I am. Your leading man.—
She groaned quietly, covering her face for a second.
—This is going to be a disaster.—
—Nah,— he said, nudging her lightly. —It’s going to be great.—
She peeked at him through her fingers.
—You don’t even know what you’re doing.—
—I know enough.—
—Oh, really?—
He tilted his head slightly, that teasing glint back in his eyes.
—Yeah.—
A beat.
—Let’s do a music video.—
Amelie stared at him for a second.
Then smiled and just like that the cold didn’t feel so bad anymore.
