Rap Insomniac (© Method Man) hours... In December of 2007, Def Jam held a listening party out here in LA for The Big Doe Rehab, which dropped on December 4th (coincidentally, the birthday of Def Jam's, ahem, president at the time). Ghostface wasn't at the event, sadly, but I got to hear "Yapp City" on monstrous speakers, so I can’t complain. Plus I managed to win a prize bag full of Def Jam swag (remember when "swag" meant "free shit"?) for answering the extra difficult trivia question "Who are the members of the Wu-Tang Clan?" Lol. Easy money. Funny enough, a few people at the party were prompted to answer before me aaaaaaand... nobody got it. They each listed off anywhere between four to eight names, all before drawing blanks. For fuck's sake... 😳😂 Anyway, what does this have to do with Jay-Z? Well, one of the prizes was the American Gangster acapella CD (which I didn't really need since I'd already downloaded it off Demonoid lol), but I left the event feeling inspired to remix the project. Remember, this was 2007, so a lot of J Dilla "unreleased" beat tapes were circulating online. (Naturally, I was collecting ALL OF THEM.) So over the course of that weekend - really, just one day tbh - I messed around with Jay vocals and Dilla beats and thought of calling this little blends project - you guessed it - Jay-Zilla! (Very creative, I know...) Came up with some quick artwork, aaaaaand... I never shared it online! 🤷‍♂️ I guess because I didn't remix the ENTIRE album. I'm weird like that. All or nothing. 😓 Plus I got kinda sidetracked by college and other stuff. Twelve years later and it's still collecting digital dust. But what the hell, here it is. The rough tracks and artwork remain untouched. I'm just throwing it out there on Mixcloud/HHIR for whoever's curious. I've also added a few Jay-Z/Roc-A-Fella odds and ends/pics and “Hurricane Ivan” (a nickname I didn’t choose!) mix snippets circa 2004-2006 in this post for kicks.
