Hi. I'm just wondering if you could tell me what to do if you want to sell prints of your works but most, if not all, of them are transparent bgs. Would it be possible to just slap them onto a solid color bg or should I go all out and make it fancy or... I'm not a new artist, but I AM new to selling merch and I want to do so for the first time next year at Anime Matsuri if possible...
Kiriska: I think that really depends on your work and whether you think it looks appealing enough to sell on a solid color background.
Unfortunately, it can take some trial and error to determine what is “appealing enough to sell.” Everyone’s work is different, and the only way to know for sure is to put your work out there. You can poll your online audience for opinions, etc, but nothing can replace in-person experience with actual customers.
An example:
My Amaterasu piece is one of my most popular pieces. It has a blank texture background. But that’s the style. It’s supposed to mimic scrollwork.
My Luxray is similar in style but includes a background. It is considerably less popular. But I doubt it’s because of the background -- it’s more likely the subject matter. Amaterasu as a character is just more popular than Luxray.
This Garurumon is the closest rival to Amaterasu, sales-wise. It also has a background. So again, I doubt the background is the determining factor here.
Most of my original work has “plain” colored backgrounds or abstract shapes/colors. I think the emptiness is an important compositional element of those pieces. No one’s ever told me that I should do more backgrounds.
So yeah. It depends on your work and what you’re going for. I’ve seen plenty of pin-ups on just plain white backgrounds because that’s the style. Try to figure out what solution best suits your work and tweak as needed.
Good luck!

So now Sin enters the fray playing fools with me. Before she 'made up' with Regina, she told me how she "fully believed me" in the shit I've been given. And since they made up, she has been defending Regina's side and being a place to vent. She's asking for archives for proof of the trash going on and saying how this stuff is based off old drama. Let me tell you that it isn't. Things Regina has done since January 1, 2017 Spoof calls in February. Police report confirming it. Threats made on tumblr through fodder alts at the same time. Harassing my friends to force them into relaying shit to me. Over the course of 4 days with a sob story about her grandmother's death and claiming they had done NOTHING to me this year and that they wish to live their grandmother's legacy to be a good person and "can't hate me anymore." Trying to add my friends on other social media services, friends she knows do not want to be in any contact with her. Stalking my following, utilizing an exploit on deviantart. Impersonating people and hopping onto my stream, showing said exploits. Hinted at their methodologies in trying to rid a problematic person eg- DMCA, "killing them" via artwork, fear mongering Created an alternate account to lurk on my server, account was bugged and accessed rants. created invite links to it to which she attempted to join right after and was immediately banned. Alt banned right after. Found only because she kept mentioning a bugged account (still does) on my server. So you think she has done nothing as of late? All of these are current, the latest being about... oh I don't know, a week ago. Stop defending someone who wanted to dox you and treated you like shit. -Wynter.
Now, this girl doesn't have a name yet, but I really liked the design Sinamuna came up with! Her species is called a "Wingu", which is so simple but clever, I love it. Another attack for the Art Fight!
This is Uptown Chic, a Zephyr Breeze/Rarity next-gen by Sinamuna.
I honestly couldn’t tell that the dad was supposed to be Zephyr Breeze. I straight-up thought this was a RariJack shipping pony.
ANYWAY
This is yet another case of just color-picking and not actually putting forth any effort into making a well-designed shipping foal. The only true detail put in here is the shape of the mane and tail, which I can actually appreciate here. That part of this looks absolutely great.
But the purple and yellow together don’t look so good. The eyes are literally Zephyr Breeze’s coat color, the yellow is his mane/tail (not even altered), and the purple gradient and body color are pure Rarity.
This is the palette I got from blending Rarity and Zephyr together. I’ll admit that I’m not really fond of any of the mane colors, but for this shipping foal, I would lean towards Zephyr’s end of the spectrum. The blueish-purple at the top there is the eye color, and eye colors usually work pretty well.
But in going through Sinamuna’s gallery, I noticed that there are literally a shitton of shipping designs that are just color-picking and it really bothers me. Like, a lot.
