#sin of lying

I saw this post in the Christianity tag and it's probably buried somewhere in my queue list. The main point was that lying is never ok. Incredulously, the post even claimed that God may have blessed people in WW2 more if they had never lied to protect Jews. To me, it seemed like total nonsense. Sin is wrong, but we live in a sinful world and sometimes we need to make hard decisions. For example, I watched a documentary about the horrible situation in Haiti where a wife told her husband to hide under the bed, and he hid while a gang of men brutally raped her. She did it because she knew the men would outright kill him. Killing is wrong, but we have provisions for self-defence and other things such as the death penalty.

I don't know. Maybe I need to be a better Christian or something because the idea that we shouldn't lie at all seems a bit too much. If lying means saving someone's life, I am doing so. If a gunman asks me where my family is, am I supposed to rat them out?
