#simply existing

I was talking about something that happened when i was a young teen and friend of mine genuinely couldn't understand why I would do something kind without needed something in return.

I met a girl a little older then me. She was dressed for summer, orange shorts and light pink top.

She told me she had been at a sleep over and had argued with the other girl.

In return the host made her call her mother and then made her wait outside in the cold.

She hadn't anticipated the sudden turn of events. 

Amidst the hum of amuse rain began to fall. Icy tears soaked our hair and clothes as I waited there with her. 

Her face twisted with distress as the water began to pool on the asphalt. 

Her pastel pink and purple converse were cracked on the sides a common issue at the time. 

I allowed her to stand atop my boots. Sturdy steel to keep her dry. My coat around her shoulders. 

It was strange being so close to a complete stranger but anything to protect her favorite socks. 

Her mother came shortly after, a face of confusion as we shivered together.

I watched her leave in silence needing nothing in return. 

The simple act of care enough. 

He could not understand why I would allow someone much less a complete stranger to dirty my boots. To temporarily wear my beloved coat without expecting something in return. 

As if simply being able to reach out and help another human being wasn't reason enough. 

I do not share this for praise or attention. 

A act of kindness should never be motivated by reward or Internet clout.
