Aunt Sarah had always been a bit of a philanthropist. Or at least, she liked to appear that way. The great hero of her times, so kind and knowledgeable. Si had seen through it almost as soon as he’d met her, in the dingy corner of the orphanage he’d lived in. She’d been on a ‘grand tour of the Asias’ at the time and had taken it upon herself to rescue some poor, impoverished children – him included. It was beyond him really, how she thought taking a child to a country where they didn’t speak the language and forcing a new name upon them was an improvement. But he quickly learned to appear grateful for the ‘gift’. The happier he seemed and the more endeared to her presence he acted, the more money was showered upon him.

With Am’s help, it soon worked into a beautiful double act. It didn’t matter that she’d taken them from two different countries, the general rabble couldn’t tell the difference. And that was how the performance worked. They learned to move like the other, talk like the other, think in perfect synchronisation. Though he liked to believe he was the brains of the act, nudging for the worst every time. After all, Aunt Sarah had stolen his chance to live a normal life in a normal family.

It bubbled away in him for a long time, chipping at his insides, the thought of this other life that could have been. He’d never been as thankful as Am.

CONNECTIONS

Sophia Reynolds: In all truths, Si doesn’t have any feelings about the girl either way. But he always found making her life living hell whenever they came to visit painfully entertaining. He wonders if he should try it in this world too.

Diaval Raven: Si has a strange sort of admiration for the man, though he isn’t sure what for. There’s a certain aura about him that seems worth respecting.
