Years later, with Hi-de-Hi! at its peak, he still recalled his horror at seeing his own face on his television debut. 'I could hardly believe it was me,' he said. 'It was rather like a dreadful moving passport photograph, endlessly showing oneself at one's worst. I've hardly watched myself since.
Self-image was a constant doubt raging in Simon's mind. The gentle curves of his face would eventually be part of the charm that made the British public fall in love with Jeffrey Fairbrother, but in those early years, the fear that his looks might hold him back caused a great deal of inner turmoil. It was a recurring theme across interviews for many years and the depth of feeling ranged from mild irritation to hatred.
'He couldn't bear the fact that his face was wonky,' remembers Beckie.
"That's why he never really wanted to go into films, because of the idea of seeing his face that big. He did have quite a thing about it, that he'd never be a proper leading man because he didn't look like Jeremy Irons, who was proper pin-up stuff.' - page 65 of Simon Cadell the authorised biography by Brian Slade
