Silver Age Superman was a Total Dick to Supergirl
He’s faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound ... and a total dick to his cousin, it seems. Here’s just a few examples that prove it.
Action Comics #252
In Supergirl’s first adventure Kal-El encounters Kara Zor-El fresh after she crash lands on Earth. After a two page flashback in which she relates her tragic backstory to him, including the recent death of both her parents and the destruction of her entire home city, she is overjoyed to discover that Kal is her cousin. In her enthusiasm she, quite naturally, asks if she can live with him -- Kal is her only remaining living relative after all. Listening to the young teen’s heartfelt story, and witnessing her tears at the loss of her parents, cousin Kal naturally ... dumps Kara in an orphanage and hardly ever bothers to visit her.
Action Comics #258
When Kara first appeared on Earth, cousin Kal-El insists that she hide her existence to the world at large so that she could act as his secret weapon. But just six months after her arrival, Supergirl encounters Krypto the Super Dog and decides that it is surely safe to share her existence with Superman’s best friend. To the teenage Kara this didn’t seem like such a big deal, but when Kal-El finds out, he is very upset and decides her actions are worthy of punishment. Weighing up the situation, Kal-El determines the most appropriate sentence for the fifteen year old wannabe superheroine is ... banishment and solitary confinement for one whole year on a distant asteroid.

By the mid 1960s life got very complicated for Kara Zor-El. She was trying to find her place in the world as a young woman transitioning into adulthood, having recently moved out of her parent’s home to attend college. At the same time she was still donning a cape and saving the planet on a daily basis. Eventually something had to give, and it happened in the pages of Brave and Bold #63. Kara decides to put her life on hold, take a gap year, and spend some time living the life of a normal everyday woman in Paris. Kal-El of course immediately understands the great responsibility that rests on the young teen’s narrow shoulders, and is fully supportive of her desire to take some qualify time away from her duties as Supergirl. Just kidding ... he totally ignores her concerns, gives her a stern lecture her about how she isn’t permitted to have a normal life, and then instructs Wonder Woman to follow Kara to Paris and talk some sense into her.
