☕ the reception of Anne Carson compared to other contemporary translators
There's a lot there, right?
There's the fact that it often seems like people don't know what a translator does - that obviously the translator is trying to convey the meaning of the original "faithfully," but that's often impossible, especially because part of the original is the how of what's conveyed rather than the what, and because figuring out what is being conveyed is already interpretation;
there's the fact the people often don't separate Carson and Sappho or Carson and Euripides;
and there's the fact that Carson specifically calls her translations "versions," but that's often ignored. She's not trying to give a word-for-word Oresteia - she's trying to create a good theatrical experience.
I don't love Carson's translations - she makes a lot of interesting choices that I appreciate artistically, but that I just don't agree with or really enjoy. But I wish people would acknowledge, I guess, how many choices she has made, and really separate her from the ancient author. To be fair, I wish people would do that with all translations - there are so many translated things on tumblr that just go completely uncredited, and translation matters so much.
