Ok Im actually convinced Shawn knows he's in love with Cory, and he knows full well what he's doing when he does/says certain things..
For example, starting off with a CRAZY ONE. If we are going off of Girl Meets World canon. WHY did Shawn give Cory a RING?! And then they just have rings together??? The man has a WIFE Shawn. Like have some dam decorum.
Then bro the WEDDING EPISODE. Their breakup episodes. The episode where he was pissed at Cory about breaking his promise to take him to Vermont and everything.
When he tells Topanga she's one of the best people in his life. She asks who's first and he says "He is".
When he tells Cory "You think I don't know you better than anybody?" because WHAT ELSE
When he took Cory on that trip to tell him he's planning on leaving. Just to be happy with him again before he leaves. And he knew Cory would make a scene, but he took him anyway.
JUST THECWAY HE SPEAKS. HIS ACTIONS. YOU CANT TELL ME HE DOESNT KNOW HES IN LOVE WITH THAT BOY.
AND HE JUST BECOMES SO DISTRAUGHT IN MOMENTS WHERES HES REMINDED CORY 'DOESNT FEEL THE SAME WAY'.

So Iām noticing that in Season 1, theres been a few times where when faced with basically the idea of being interested in girls, Cory proclaims that will never happen, and he involves Shawn in his statement.
And Shawn immediately ādisregardsā Coryās statement each time.
The two times Iām thinking of rn are in She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not, and in Boy Meets Girl.
The first instance (is a clip I posted prior to this post) where essentially Cory says love is making people crazy and that he and Shawn should opt out and stay the same forever, Shawn agrees, but right after that a cute girl walks in and he āgoes crazyā while Cory frantically tries to remind him that they had a deal.
The second instance takes place after Mr. Feeny shows them a video about puberty (and the inevitability of it). Cory is 50/50 on the likelihood of all those things happening. He says maybe itāll happen, maybe it wonāt. And then he lumps Shawn in, proclaiming that neither of them will fall victim to this craziness with hormones and subsequently, girls. But a girl in the desk next to Shawn drops her pencil and again heās lost right after Cory finishes his statement.
From my interpretation this all still lends to the idea that Cory has feelings for Shawn and doesnāt know it (and heās under the impression his feelings are reciprocatedā¦ stay with me lol).
To get logic and dispute out of the way, YES, naturally it is a best friend thing to include them and wanting them to do the same things as you. And also within the span of the show, Cory has seen people behave strangely behind this ālove thingā (which is really this āinevitableā girl thing). Heās even been abandoned at times for girls/āloveā. So, it makes sense why he doesnāt want to participate and why he doesnāt want Shawn to either.
Heās seen where this path of love and girls and hormones lands people. And thatās all to it. From a completely straight narrative itās practical.
BUT we arent here for the ālogicalā and straight narrative š¤
With all that being said, for Cory itās less about others. Itās more about Shawn.
In most instances Cory assumes Shawn into his same beliefs about girls/love.
And when presented with this undesirable interested-in-girls behavior from his brother, Cory looked past his small lens of life, and disdain for the idea in general, to encourage Eric to call back the same girl Eric had abandoned him for. Which resulted in Cory saying āIām told love is worth itā and shrugs like thatās gotta be the farthest thing from the truth.
With Shawn he isnāt capable of doing this.
He gets defensive instead.
When Shawn was interested in a girl, Cory took it upon himself to basically retaliate. He tried to pursue a girl too. I guess to teach Shawn a lesson or something?
Like maybe with the hopes that Shawn would feel the same way. That heād see what Cory was doing was obviously horribly wrong and then stop pursuing girls himself for Coryās sake?
Cory claims he isnāt understanding of love and romance but the whole time he IS. He makes promises with Shawn and to Shawn, he makes sacrifices for Shawn (even ones that could land him in a lot of trouble), and he behaves recklessly and dramatically on behalf of his feelings towards Shawn. He does some of the same things with Shawn that he despises so much about people being in love basically.
(And Cory doesnāt get the idea of love because of the emphasis of it pertaining to girls. It would no doubt click if someone really in depth explained that for HIM those things apply to Shawn at times. Or that the infinite potential of love can be pursued by more than a man and a woman. He still wouldnāt get it though because his feelings are so ingrained)
Iāve mentioned it before that it seems that Cory has these feelings and doesnāt know because he assumes this just has to do with being friends. And heās never known what itās like to NOT feel this way about his best friend.
To summarize, Coryās feelings are romantic. To him, theyāre normal friendly Shawn feelings. The crush or love he has for Shawn is so fundamental to his connection with Shawn itās just a product of their friendship in his mind.
With Cory having these wires crossed, he assumes Shawn feels the same. Because heās equating their friendship to these feelings that are just apart of him now.
What Cory doesnāt understand is that, Shawn does feel the same about their actual friendship. This deeper misattributed layer Cory has is solely his own. His aversion to girls and love, and roping Shawn into it is about that layer.
When Shawn pursues girls, Cory is jealous and he doesnāt understand that he can mean just as much to Shawn, with him liking and pursuing girls. He doesnāt understand this because of what Shawn means to HIM.
Of course, this would have to be patiently but firmly spelled out for Cory. That what he feels for Shawn isnāt just friendship and Shawnās not doing anything wrong by pursuing girls other than breaking Coryās jealous little heart lol
This idea of Shawnās compliance starts to change for Cory as the show goes on, however. But maybe thatās why Cory just started giving in to the pressure to follow the heterosexual narrative.
My question is I wonder if Shawn didnāt disregard these 'pacts'.... and if he didnāt start being interested in girls/pursuing girls: what wouldāve happened? Would Cory have not started feeling like he was late and left out?
Would they have just been content being regular old Cory and Shawn?
