Elizabeth Vigee-Le Brun painted this portrait of Isabella Teotochi Marini in 1792 for Isabella's lover, Dominique Vivant Denon. Vigee-Le Brun was a prolific French portraitist who began her career in pre-Revolutionary France. She painted several portraits of Marie Antoinette and the royal family. Consequently, she had to flee France with her daughter and lived in exile for many years, traveling across Europe and spending significant periods of time in both Italy and Russia. She was able to return to France before her death.
