He sucked in a breath before moving a hand up to run his fingertips over his exposed jawline. It felt weird not having the mask to cover his face anymore. Almost foreign now to be without it. It seemed like he really had gotten used to wearing it after everything and despite how much he had complained about it to begin with. The reality of it though was that he had been lucky that his mask had been the only thing that had taken that first hit. Otherwise he could have been in some serious trouble. A simple step backwards had been all that had saved him from having his face split open at the exact moment. Honestly, he felt like the whole battle against Esidisi had been nothing but luck. He had known what he was doing for part of the fight. The rest of it was just tid bits from what he had learned in his training and coming up with his own tricks. Right tricks. Thatâs what his whole life seemed to be based around. Tricks and dumb luck. Another sigh left the Joestar and he dropped his hand away from his face. There probably wouldnât be a replacement to that mask. Time had come down to the wire and the Pillar Men had made the first move. That meant that training time was pretty much over. With the Stone just barely recovered in time before it was shipped off to Switzerland, it was now or never. The other two would be coming for them eventually as well, so they might as well go ahead and jump into the fray. Though if he were honest about that, he probably would have preferred the training for another couple days.
If he was being honest about the whole thing, Joseph had some serious doubts about this fight. Esidisi had been trouble enough. And he had won the fight against him, sure. They had even figured out a way to save Suzie when he had possessed her body after the fact. Even so, if that was what he could doâdefeating death without a real body to speak ofâhe didnât want to know what the other two could do. Something told him that it was only going to get worse from that encounter. And that fight hadnât been a walk in the park per say. It had exhausted Joseph since the two had been at it for the better part of the night. He worried that he wouldnât be enough to take on the other two. Their first fight with Wamuu had been the whole reason they had gotten into this mess. And yeah it had saved their lives and bought them some time. But not much. The only thing he had achieved by defeating Esidisi was getting the antidote to the first ring that had been placed in his body, the toxic ring around his throat. There was still one that had been placed around his heart. So, even if he didnât want to go into the battle ahead, he really didnât have a choice. Either way he could lose his life, it was just a question on how he would lose his life. He could either go fighting the way he heard his grandfather had in the stories told about him or he could be the coward he was told he was and run away from it.
While he processed the thoughts, a hand moved absently up to press to his chest, just over his heart. Thick brows furrowed over teals, usually bright and expressive now only seemed clouded and troubled. What would be the fastest way out of this without risking anyoneâs lives? He had a horrible feeling that the next fight wasnât going to end well. He didnât know whether it was intuition or what, but it just didnât sit right with him. Regardless of his doubts on his own abilities, something told Joseph that something bad was about to happen. It was as if they had gotten off too easily with nobody being seriously hurt in the fight against the first Pillar Man, especially with how powerful they were. If he could prevent them from being hurt, wouldnât he want to do it? The quickest way would be to give them what they wanted, right? They were after the Red Stone of Aja. And that stone was in his coachâs possession. He could obtain it from her and⌠try to bargain for their lives. Maybe even give up his own in exchange for theirâs? It wasâin a wayâhis fault that they even ended up in this mess. He was the one who had made the wager with Wamuu. Lisa Lisa and Caesar hadnât needed to get themselves tangled up in his mess. But they had decided to help him out. Why?
(Is this to be the Joestar legacy? Giving your life for some noble cause?)
His hand fell away from his chest, teals set on the door to his room at the estate. They were supposed to leave in the morning for Switzerland. Joseph should be resting right now. But he couldnât sleep. How could he after all that? And now he had made the decision. It would be better for one of them to lose their lives than all of them. He was going to try and reason with their foes and to do that, he needed the bargaining chip. He would need to take the Stone. It pained him to think that he may be betraying Lisa Lisa and Caesarâs trust by taking it, but to him their lives mattered more than that. They could hate him for the rest of their lives if they wanted to, so long as they were able to live. That was all the coaxing he needed to push himself up off his bed and head for the door to his room. If he had to guess, the Stone would probably be with Lisa Lisa. That meant he would have to do his best to sneak through the Estate to her room and try to locate it. Perhaps, he could even use some of the training that he had learned to aid him in doing this. Hamon could be useful in many ways, after all. Again, it didnât make him feel great using something like that against them, but he felt like he didnât really have a choice. The feeling of dread that settled in his stomach just wouldnât shake. He would much rather die for them then watching them die and end up not being able to do anything about it.
(Youâll probably hate me for this⌠Iâm sorry.)
He hesitated a moment, hand resting on the doorknob before he finally was able to pull it open slowly. Taking a step forward, Joseph leaned out of the doorway to peek down the corridor. At the moment, he didnât see or hear anyone approaching. With a nod to himself he stepped over the threshold, quietly pulling the door shut behind him. He felt nervous now that he was alone in the hall and part of him felt like he should just turn around and try to get some sleep. Again, the wave of dread washed over him though. If he didnât do this, he was certain something bad was going to happen. Either they would see that they had put faith in the wrong person, or someone was going to get hurt. Possibly even both. That wasnât something he could live with. Cautiously, slowly he crept down the hall, pausing at every doorway he came to to make sure that no one was lingering about. If he ran into Suzie or Messina or even Caesar, it was likely that they would see him back to his room. Any hopes he had to save the rest of them from some impending doom would be dashed.
