dreaming of halos round your finger
heâd never admit it, but sometimes, while cas is asleep, dean traces a circle around the angelâs ring finger.
the first few times he does it, the soft skin of the empty finger reminds him that cas isnât anyone elseâs, that heâs choosing this life, whatever that may entail, with dean. the movement comforts him, and castielâs fingers are beautiful in their grace. the repetition of the movement helps him think when the room is devoid of light and entirely too quiet for his liking. he uses the movement, the drag of his fingers around casâ as a pendulum reminding him to breathe, to ground himself, that this is the way life is now.
he gets to lay beside castiel, former angel of heaven and warrior for god, and hold him close enough to feel puffs of breath against his neck.
however, as time passes, his routine begins to feel dull in those wee morning hours. he doesnât want to feel that cas is simply settling, but fully with dean in body and spirit. he starts longing for cas to be his alone. and itâs not that cas canât hold his own, itâs just that feeling a cool metal band in the place of the bare skin would be so much more soothing. the thought sends a longing shiver down his spine. twisting a ring around and around would ease him more and he canât explain it. it would be entirely more grounding, entirely more calming, entirely more solid.
it gets him thinking that, some night, heâd like to slip a ring on castielâs finger as some symbolic confession and insight to his thoughts. itâs stupid and cheesy and, god dammit, he decides heâs gonna do it, because what better way to make a promise that heâll always be there by castielâs side, even in the restless moments of the night. that heâs watching over castiel now.
he picks a silver band, nothing too extravagant, simply solid and thick. he slips it over castielâs knuckle at 1 am on a saturday. he falls back asleep, feeling the metal under his fingers lull him to sleep.
when he wakes the next morning and brushes a strand of hair out of casâ half-asleep face, he freezes. there, on his own ring finger, is a glint of gold.
heâs wide-eyed, stunned at the sight, his heart steadily pumping, when he manages to breathe out a soft âwhen?â
cas smiles lazily and mumbles into deanâs shoulder â1:15â
