        a  simple  enough  response;  more  than  enough  to  sate  him  --  she  hoped.  she  wasn’t  terribly  far  from  the  Emerald  Ward,  and  tight  as  they  could  be  there  --  they’d  never  deny  a  Glossgleam.  though  it  seemed  she  was  paid  no  mind  as  she  rode  through  the  streets.  all  the  better;  for  once,  she  didn’t  want  eyes  on  her.  at  least,  not  when  it  mattered.

        but  when  it  did?  well...

        as  she  rounded  the  corner  she  lowered  the  passenger  window  to  her  SUV,  whilst  turning  up  the  volume  on  her  radio.  it  didn’t  matter  what  was  playing  (  much  ),  but  it  did  matter  that  it  was  loud;  attention-grabbing;  obvious.  within  her  glove  compartment  she  pulled  out  a  stick  of  minty  gum  and  helped  herself  to  a  piece.  she  wasn’t  all  too  familiar  with  the  place  he’d  described,  but  it  looked...  well...  like  a  home  in  the  emerald  ward.  she  double  checked  her  phone  to  ensure  she  was  in  the  right  spot,  then  promptly  honked  the  horn  of  her  car  twice.

        ❝  told  ya  you’d  know,  ❞  she  said  to  him,  sticking  her  head  out  of  her  window  and  offering  him  a  grin  as  she  blew  a  bubble  with  her  gum.  ❝  but  I  ain’t  waitin’  all  day  for  ya,  so  bring  whoever  you’re  bringin’  and  get  in  here.  ❞  offering  him  a  wink  she  dipped  her  head  back  into  her  car  and  waited,  only  choosing  to  unlock  the  doors  as  he  approached  the  door.  she  lowered  the  music  a  touch  as  the  door  opened,  but  not  by  much.  one  of  many  lessons  she’d  learned  was  to  cover  her  own  tracks  --  and  the  half  elf  did  so  in  several  ways.  thus,  as  she  pulled  away  from  the  home  he’d  found  himself  in,  she  took  no  time  in  getting  down  to  the  business  at  hand  --  though  not  before  offering  him  a  stick  of  gum.

        ❝  so  --  you  got  a  plan  for  your  predicament,  or  you  just  plannin’  on  goin’  in  all  gung  ho?  ❞

She’s pretending to sleep; back pressed into the hard ground, with grass tickling her ear, but she can’t help but smile at that. He got it; he understood. Her experience of having the walls of her sedentary existence crumble, only to reveal the breadth of the world that she knew nothing of... She knew, then, she was never going back.

she remembers the first time thancred said something like that. a little joke, not meant to be serious because whatever they had was not serious. they did not belong to each other, fooling around with others and usually when one woke up first, they disappeared before the other could wake up.

that felt like a lifetime ago. and maybe it even had been. those words mean something else now, they are hushed words whispered between them when they have not seen each other for a while. a promise that they belonged to each other’s side because sometimes, sometimes that is all that felt right in a world that did its best to break them. in a world that did its best to take from them all the things they cared for and loved.

so when he says it this time, she just smiles and nods and walks over to him. the raen nudges his arms just enough that he makes room underneath the blanket. amaya leans against his chest with her back, listening to his breathing.
