Guest acts on that week's episode included Willy Nelson, Marianne Faithfull, Donna Loren, Billy Preston, and The Animals. Not to be outdone, forty-eight year old Zsa Zsa (who always fibbed about her age and insisted she was "twenty-five in my mind") got into the spirit and performed a rousing cover of the 1963 Tommy Tucker blues song Hi-Heel Sneakers, as seen below.

LECTURE 13: THE STONES: Almost as popular as Muddy Waters in the United Kingdom was the legendary Blues singer and harmonica player Howlinโ Wolf (real name: Chester Arthur Burnett, 1910-1976). Members of the Rolling Stones often cited Howlinโ Wolf as being a major influence on their work. On May 20, 1965, Stones guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones got a chance to introduce his hero, Howlinโ Wolf, on the ABC variety show Shindig!. It was a delightful moment when Jones got to welcome his hero to the stage, almost like the proverbial kid in a candy store. That video footage is available here:
As for the video posted here to the Beatles Blog, it is footage of Howlinโ Wolf โ a native of Mississippi โ performing his classic Blues favourite โSmokestack Lightningโ on British television in 1964. You can tell from the rousing ovation that Wolfe receives that he is a revered figure in England. This footage also shows Howlinโ Wolf as a virtuoso harmonica player, and his vocals are vintage down-and-dirty Blues, the type that resonated with young British listeners like the members of the Rolling Stones.

LECTURE 11: BEATLEMANIA GOES GLOBAL: If you get a chance, have a look at this half-hour long episode of the rock and roll variety show SHINDIG! from October 7, 1964. Thereโs a great performance by The Beatles, providing another reminder of just how astonishingly terrific they were live. Shindig! was on the ABC network from 1964 to 1966. Though short-lived (only on the air for a year and a half), the show was popular for bringing in so many important rock stars from the period.ย
