#shindig!

Lecture 8: BRTISIH INVASION: The Rolling Stones sing “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” their huge 1965 hit that soared to Number 1 on both sides of the Atlantic. In the United States, the song elevated them in popularity to the top of the British Invasion, alongside The Beatles. This concert footage aired on - yep, you guessed it - the ABC TV show Shindig! – original air date: May 20, 1965. That night, the members of the Stones had the fortune to introduce their personal hero to Shindig!, the legendary bluesman Howlin’ Wolf. “Howlin’ Wolf was one of our greatest idols,” proclaimed guitarist Brian Jones on the broadcast.  The Rolling Stones recorded an early, alternative version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" on May 10, 1965, at Chess Studios in Chicago. This original version featured Brian Jones on harmonica and a slower tempo before the band returned to the studio to re-record the more famous version with a fuzz-guitar riff at RCA Studios two days later.

LECTURE 12: IN THE SHADOW OF THE BEATLES: On October 28, 1964, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas (another Brian Epstein-managed group) appeared on the popular TV variety show Shindig! on ABC. They opened the show with “Da Doo Ron Ron,” and returned later on the episode for to belt out this hit of theirs, “Little Children.” Like The Beatles and Cilla Black, Billy J. and his band came from Liverpool, and they galloped into America with the early vanguard of the British Invasion. “Little Children” would be his biggest hit, reaching #1 in the UK and #7 in America. After 1965, Kramer’s fame began to wane, and he would never replicate his early successes of ’64 and ’65. 

LECTURE 11: BEATLEMANIA GOES GLOBAL: If you get a chance, have a look at this half-hour long episode of the rock and roll variety show Shindig! from October 7, 1964. There’s a great performance by The Beatles, providing another reminder of just how astonishingly terrific they were live. Shindig! was on the ABC network from 1964 to 1966. Though short-lived (only on the air for a year and a half), the show was popular for bringing in so many important rock stars from the period.

Looking fantastic at 51 and dressed in a shimmering top and mod bell-bottomed trousers, Hedy introduced the British singing group The Dave Clark Five and chatted with the show’s host Jimmy O'Neill.
