Happy birthday, Hajime! I had a hectic schedule today but I’m glad I got to post this while it’s still his birthday in Japan (even tho at the limit).
Honestly now, Toriumi is literally something else. I haven’t had so much fun translating something in a while, and if you start reading this, you’ll understand what I mean. Words of wisdom from Hajime’s voice actor 。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
Many thanks to Ruby for letting me use her tsukipro info issue (December 2018) to translate this (mine happens to be the next one... so while the cover is Hajime and Yuki, the interview features the February duo) and also to Ryota for helping me proof this~
Please don’t repost/retranslate/reuse my translations! Likes and reblogs are appreciated! I’ll have fun in the tags if you want to read my impressions on this~
The new ‘Tsukiuta.’ season brings forth the Gravi leader, Mutsuki Hajime, for the second volume! The drama part includes an episode from his old days with Haru…?
―— The ‘Tsukiuta.’ series embarked on a 4th season. Are there any changes in terms of acting compared to how it used to be in the beginning?
Toriumi: The fact that he’s not good at talking when he’s by himself and the fact everyone around Hajime-san considers him to be a ‘king’ when he himself has doubts about that are both things that have remained the same since the beginning of the series. He finds himself in an environment that changes rapidly and that may cause him anxiety at times, but someone, by the name of “Haru”, is there to pull him back to the surface. I think that’s another thing we know well. This time we also go through an episode from their high school days, and despite Hajime-san not having such complex feelings back then, we can still see how strong those two’s relationship is. He is the smartest among his classmates, the flawless, perfect human you could say, and this CD’s dialogues highlight once again his indisputable position in the top. But I think that position built walls of solitude around him, in a form peculiar to him. His results were good to begin with, though he’s the type who doesn’t want to lose to anyone after having reached the superlative; that goes without saying. He makes every effort to fill the gap between his self-evaluation and others’ evaluations of him…… what a 23-year-old (laughs). I also made my debut as a voice actor at the age of 23. Hajime-san’s mental age is probably somewhere around 43 years old. I guess that’s what makes him watch his surroundings a little more than he should. His faint heart and the way he tends to worry about things sometimes are far from how a 23-year-old should act.
―— It’s already been 6 years since Yayoi Haru became his combi partner. How would you describe the two’s relationship in a few words?
Toriumi: I think ‘the good, ol’ married couple’ would suit them, with Hajime-san being the husband of course, and Haru his wife. Even among the unit members, he's the one to do the back-up work, in the current drama tracks he tells Hajime-san “I’m here no matter what. If possible, right beside you.”, and he supports him from one step behind. This time there’s also an unusual conflict between Hajime-san and Haru, but well, fights are not uncommon things for married couples after all. As the other members are younger, there will always be sides that Haru won’t show to them. But the two are able to know what the other is feeling and their relationship has always allowed them to be direct with each other.
―— Tell us what the listeners should look for in this song.
Toriumi: If there’s ‘THE Hajime-san’, there’s also ‘THE Machigerita-kun’. This song’s world view and lyrics also bring forth Machigerita’s world in full force. It’s been a long time since I recorded something for the ‘Tsukiuta.’ series, but the instant I heard this song’s demo I thought “This is it. This is ‘Tsukiuta.’. Hajime-san, long time no see!”. My second thought was about how really difficult the song was. But now that I think about it, all the song recordings I’ve done for ‘Tsukiuta.’ have been like that (laughs).
―— Please leave a message for the fans.
Toriumi: It’s been a long time since I got a CD that digs into one’s character through both musical and drama parts. As the anime and other projects only boosted his evolution, it’s not something that brings him back to his roots, but it does convey his early beginnings. The song also turned out to be cool, so I think you’ll be able to enjoy listening to it. There are still more CDs to be released, so please take care of Six Gravity and the ‘Tsukiuta.’ series in the future.

[Kanji/Romaji/English Lyrics] Tsukiuta. 4th Season Vol.2 Mutsuki Hajime - Shigetsuya
Singer: Mutsuki Hajime (CV. Toriumi Kousuke)
Lyricist & composer: Machigerita
[Kanji]

[English]
After being buried in darkness for so long… two pines wish to pledge their troth
Advancing down the pathway of love… trust devoid of doubt… they're now awaiting their oaths
The remnants of snow had melted and knowing that the blossoms will fade too is... heartbreaking
Dwelling on grief… contemplating so to the point… that it worsens, it's a futile attempt at love
Embraced by the shadow of a dark drape
As I am veiled by it, I entwined our hands and proclaimed
“Only for tonight, in this single moment, my love is… ah… all yours”
The purple moon is shining... melting the two of us together
Despite knowing this is a forbidden act…
The moonlight will be concealing even that forbidden colour
So this entire night… and until dawn
Just like that… we shall kiss
I yearn for so much that I might not even reach it... The dead leaves continue to dance with uneasiness...
Piling up on the pathway of love… the days when I’d envelop you are hidden beyond blindness
You sob, saying "I don't want this season of falling flowers to continue"
And yet those words that echoed in the night... I knew they'd never come true
Hidden in the depths of your lonely eyes
Your smoldering feelings are lustrous
“Only for tonight, in this single moment, my love is… ah… all yours”
The purple moon is shining… passion will flow through
Despite knowing this is a forbidden act…
The moonlight will be concealing even this sin
So this entire night… and until dawn
Just like that… we shall kiss
The purple moon is shining... melting the two of us together
Despite knowing this is a forbidden act…
The moonlight will be concealing even that forbidden colour
So this entire night… and until dawn
Just like that… we shall kiss
Only for now… only for tonight...
Just like that… we shall kiss

→ two pines (twin pines or aioi no matsu in Japanese) refers to a Japanese legend which talks about two wedded and paired pine trees (bifurcated trunk). Inside the pines dwells the spirit of the Maiden of Takasago who was seen once by the son of Izanagi who fell in love and wedded her. Both lived to a very great age, dying at the same hour on the same day, and since then their spirits abide in the tree. On moonlight nights they return to human shape to revisit the scene of their earthly felicity and pursue their work of gathering pine needles. According to legend, will remain together for eternity and they are a symbol of the marital relationship
→ pledge one’s troth = make a solemn pledge of commitment or loyalty, especially in marriage
→ ‘forbidden colour’ refers to restrictions on the use of colors by ranks of Heian era courtiers. Purple was only permitted to be worn by those with ultimate power in the imperial family. (Another forbidden colour would be orange-scarlet, though its use was not as strictly regulated as royal purple. For Hajime’s song, you can ignore orange-scarlet.)
Lastly, please note that Machigerita’s songs are harder to comprehend (or at least, when it comes to Hajime’s songs), so we apologize for any possible errors beforehand.
