So in grand Wolviesgal fashion, Iâm pushing the literal last minute here and posting my gift for the 2018 Shieldshock Christmas Fic Exchange.
Here is my gift for @i-am-the-wall and I apologize for it being insanely late. If a deadline exists, I will get up close and personal with it before finishing my task. Pretty much sums up my entire school history. :)
So here it is, I present...
A Christmas Wish
Also posted here on A03.
âThatâs what I want for Christmas, Mommy.â
The noise of Tony Starkâs Christmas party faded into the background as Darcyâs heart sank. The only thing her song wanted for Christmas was the one thing she could never give him. Even Santa, with all his miracle gift-giving skills, wouldnât be able to pull this one off.
Jake, her darling boy, had just declared that he wanted Santa to make him Captain America for a day. He didnât want a costume or to play dress-up (he was very clear on that), but actually to be Captain America. Wear the suit, carry the shield, carryout a mission.
Darcy watched her son make his way up to Santa, aka Clint in a suit and beard, and wasnât sure how he was going to respond to Jakeâs request. She could only hope that his own kids had gotten him used to strange Christmas requests. Clint patted his knee and Jake climbed up. She couldnât make out what the two were saying, but she knew the precise moment when Jake asked to become Captain America because Clintâs eyebrows shot up and disappeared underneath his Santa hat.
âSo what did he ask for to get that reaction out of Santa?â Darcy jumped at the sound of Steveâs voice. She was so caught up in her own thoughts she hadnât noticed him beside her.
âJake has decided to ask Santa to make him Captain America for a day.â It was Steveâs turn to raise his eyebrows.
âHe wants what? He means to dress up like me, right?â
âNope,â Darcy sighed. âHe doesnât want to cosplay, he wants to be Captain America.â
Steveâs eyes widened and he exhaled sharply. âI donât want to see Jake disappointed, but I donât know if we can pull that one off.â He bit his lip, deep in thought. Darcy had to look back at her son. She and Steve were friends, but there were times she felt very un-friend-like thoughts about him.
âPull what off?â
Darcy spun around. âGod, Tony!â she gasped. âWe need to put a bell on you.â
Tony looked offended. âI donât move that quietly. And you two are ignoring the party.â He gestured to the events around them. âWhatâs got you two whispering and plotting over here?â
âWeâre neither whispering nor plotting, Tony,â Darcy said, rolling her eyes. âWeâre just discussing the impossible gift that Jake asked Santa for and Mommy wonât â â
âHey buddy!â Steve cut her off before Darcy could do the unforgiveable and ruin Santa for her five-year-old son. âHow was your visit with Santa?â
Jake looked disappointed. âSanta said he would try his best, but he might not be able to get it for me. And he said that I would probably have better luck using mistletoe to get a baby brother.â He looked up at his mother. âWhat did he mean by that? I thought mommies and daddies made babies, not mistletoe?â
Tony snorted, Steve turned to glare at âSanta,â and Darcy closed her eyes and wished for the floor to swallow her up. Clint was well aware of her un-friend-like feelings towards Steve and Darcy could feel the blush flood her face as she worried what else he might have said to her son.
âListen, kid,â Tony crouched down in front of Jake. âWhat do you want for Christmas? Weâll do our best to help Santa with it.â
Jake looked Tony straight in the eye and said, âI want to be Captain America for a day and work with the rest of the Avengers.â Tonyâs eyes shot to Steve, who just blushed at the boyâs sincerity.
âUh, okay. Well, let me talk to Santa and see what we can do. How does that sound?â Jake nodded. âWhy do you want to be Captain America anyway? Itâs just Steve and heâs not as awesome as me.â Tony smirked.
Jake sighed, âCaptain America is all about fighting bullies and maybe if I can be him, I can stand up to the mean kids at school.â
âOh baby,â Darcyâs heart constricted, worried that her son was being bullied. âAre other kids being mean to you?â
He shook his head. âNo mom, itâs not me. But these jerks are being mean to Samir and heâs my friend. I donât like it.â
Darcy could see Steveâs jaw clench and before he opened his mouth, she knew what he was going to say.
âBuddy, weâre going to do whatever we can to help Santa with this, okay?â Darcy just stared at him, unable to believe he was actually agreeing to this. âEveryone needs a day off sometimes, even me. You can be my backup for that day, okay?â
Jake threw himself at Steve, hugging him fiercely before running off to talk to Santa again. âThanks, Steve!â
There was a moment of dead silence before Darcy spun towards Steve. âDude, what the hell?â
âYeah, I know. I just couldnât not do this. Not when he wants to learn how to fight bullies.â
âOkay, but Steve, what the hell?â
âI know, Tony!â
Having spoken to Santa to give him the good news, Jake wandered off to get some food. Santa, however, wandered over to talk to the bleeding heart of the Avengers.
âWhat the hell, Steve?â asked Clint.
-----
The next morning after Jake left for school, Tony called everyone to the boardroom. âGather round, children. Thanks to Captain Friendly here, we have one hell of a project to pull off.â Each of the Avengers, and Darcy, turned to Steve with a mixture of curiosity, frustration, and resignation in their eyes.
âTonyâŚâ Steve started, but Darcy quickly cut him off.
âNo Steve, you donât get to speak. Not at the moment and not unless youâve got a really good plan here.â At Steveâs chagrined look, she shook her head. âYouâve pretty much promised my son that he gets to be Captain America for a day. How are you planning on making this work? He wants his own uniform, your shield, and bad guys to fight. How?â
Bruce furrowed his brow. âCould he even lift your shield, Steve? I know heâs a strong kid, but itâs heavy and nearly as tall as he is.â
âWell, we could make him a Jake-sized shield. Something smaller and more lightweight maybe,â Tony mused. He pulled out his tablet and began making notes.
âBut how do we convince him to use a replica shield and not the real thing?â Natasha didnât always believe in the intelligence of others, but she knew Jake was a smart kid and would not be swayed from his wish. âHe wants Steveâs shield.â
Clint sat back in his chair, tapping a pen on his knee. âWeâve got to let him try the shield. Hand it to him and pretend like weâre sure heâs going to be able to wield it no problem. When he struggles, weâll offer him his own special shield. Something thatâs more suited to him in size and weight.â
Natasha shook her head. âIt canât be that easy to change a kidâs mind. Iâve met your children before, Clint. Jake is as stubborn as any of yours.â
âIâm not saying we make it out of plastic or anything. Thereâs no way thatâll get past Jake. But maybe something like aluminum. Metal like Steveâs, but not as heavy and not as big.â
âTitanium would be better. Not as lightweight as aluminum, but stronger and more durable.â Tony didnât even look up from his tablet as he spoke.
Darcyâs eyes widened. âNo,â she said emphatically. âWe are not giving my son a weapon.â
âNo, âtis not a weapon,â declared Thor. âItâs part of his armor, his Captain America persona. He uses it for defense and not attack.â
âOkay, so that takes care of the shield,â said Bruce. âWhat else do we have to worry about? Uniform? Harmless villain? Controlled scenario where Jake can be the hero?â
Natasha looked over at Clint, âYou used to make your costumes in the circus, right?â Clint closed his eyes and sighed.
âI regret ever telling you that. But yes, I can still sew.â
âOkay, so that takes care of the uniform.â
âI refuse to go shopping for materials though! I am not going anywhere near the stores this close to Christmas.â
Tony put his tablet down and looked around the table. âOkay, hereâs how itâs going to go. Bruce and I will work on the shield. Clint, youâve got the uniform, but Steve has to do the shopping for you. Natasha and Thor, youâre on mission planning. Youâve got to come up with some form of event that would require the Avengers. We canât risk Jake getting hurt, but we do need a semi-realistic villain.â
âAnd where are we going to find one of those?â Natasha scoffed.
âOh, since Steve has the day off from being Captain America, and he got us into this, I think heâll make an excellent villain.â Tonyâs grinned sardonically.
Steve dropped his head in his hands and sighed. This was his fault and he knew it.
-----
âRemind me how I got roped into coming out with you, Steve?â Darcy dodged another oblivious shopper as she and Steve walked through midtown.
She really wasnât as angry or frustrated as she wanted him to believe. She wasnât entirely happy with the situation, but she certainly didnât mind spending the afternoon with Steve while he hunted down the items on Clintâs must-have-but-impossible-to-find shopping list. So far, they had three things checked off the list. Unfortunately, the list has ten items, so there was still shopping to be done. But the decorations were bright and there was just enough snow on the ground to make it all feel very Christmassy. That being said, at some point in the near future, she was going to demand a hot chocolate.
âYouâre here because youâre a kind and wonderful person.â Steve smiled at her and Darcy was pretty sure her insides turned to goo. Sheâd follow him anywhere if he kept that up. âPlus, youâre a much better at navigating this city than I am. I donât know Manhattan nearly as well as I know Brooklyn.â
âSmooth, Steve,â she rolled her eyes. âFlattery will get you everywhere though. Next stop is just two blocks up and one block over.â She looked down at her list and missed the look in Steveâs eyes.
Unfortunately, even the most dedicated have their limits when it comes to shopping at Christmas. Four more stores, miles of walking, and one too many versions of The Twelve Days of Christmas later, Darcyâs nerves were stretched to the breaking point.
Needless to say, the subway may not have been the best choice of transportation to get home.
They were only two stops from the tower when Darcy snapped. She was fine with the crowded cars and people with too many shopping bags. She was okay with the rambling conspiracy theorist who ranted about Christmas and how it was a ploy to bankrupt the people. She was even enjoying the carolers. Right up until they started in on the Twelve Days of Christmas. Steve kept his hand over Darcyâs mouth and his arm wrapped around her waist for two full stops, not that he was complaining. It really wouldnât do for Captain America to be anywhere near an attack on Christmas carolers just before Christmas. He didnât let go until they were off the subway, the doors had closed, and the train departed.
Darcy glared at him. âI wasnât going to throw down on the subway.â
âSure you wouldnât have,â Steve snorted. âYou were just going over there to calmly ask them to pick a new song.â
âSmartass,â she muttered before turning and walking away.
-----
âGood morning, sleepyhead,â Darcy whispered to her boy. He rolled over in bed and blinked at her.
âNooo, too early mommy!â Jake closed his eyes and burrowed back under the covers. Darcy couldnât help but laugh. He really did take after her in so many ways.
âCome on, baby. Youâve got a big day ahead. Steve just called. Something has come up and heâs not going to be able to work with the Avengers today. Itâs all you.â
Jake sat upright in his bed, eyes wide. âReally? I get to be Captain America today?â Darcy nodded. âBut what if Iâm not ready? I havenât practiced.â He looked so fearful that Darcy wanted to cuddle him and tell him he could just stay home and not be Captain America.
âYouâll be fine, sweetheart. The other Avengers will teach you what you need to know and make sure you can handle anything that comes up.â
Jake scrambled out of bed. âI donât have a uniform or anything! How am I going to be Captain America without a uniform?â
âJust get dressed, honey, Iâm sure theyâve got something for you.â
Darcy was impressed. Apparently with proper motivation, Jake was able to get dressed and ready in record time. Within minutes, he was ready to head out and meet the rest of the Avengers. Bagel in hand, of course, because no superhero starts the day without breakfast.
All of the Avengers were waiting for Jake when he arrived in the common area. Clint handed him a folded uniform.
âMorning, Jake! We got you your own uniform, just like Steveâs.â Jakes eyes grew big as he held up the clothing.
âLook mom! Itâs awesome and heavy and not at all like that Halloween costume Andy wore to school! I canât wait to wear it! Can I put it on now? Please, please, please?â Jake was vibrating with excitement. Darcy nodded because she wasnât sure if she could otherwise answer without laughing.
Jake bolted out of the room, just far enough to be out of sight, to change. He was back in minutes and Darcy was sure she would find his clothes flung about the hallway. He couldnât possibly be expected to be neat with his everyday clothes when there was his own Captain America uniform waiting for him, could he?
Steve crouched down in front of Jake. âAlright buddy, if youâre going to be Captain America today, then you need a shield.â He held out his shield to Jake. âCan you promise me that youâll take good care of this for me today?â
Jake nodded and reached for the shield. Steve helped him slide the straps over his arms and then let go, letting Jake carry it himself. Darcy couldnât help but giggle as Jake could barely see over the shield. His hand slipped a bit and he dropped the shield on the floor. When it clanged loudly, he jerked it back up and clipped himself on the nose. Steve winced and reached out to steady the shield.
âSorry, buddy, but I think this is more Steve-sized and not so much Jake-sized,â he said gently. âBut I think Tonyâs got something there that might be better for you.â
Tony held out the smaller, but otherwise identical, replica shield. âThis one is for you, okay? You might find it a bit easier to carry.â
Jake took the shield carefully from Tony. Steve helped him slide his arm through the straps. It was a much better fit for the young boy. He bounced with excitement. âWhen can we go train?â
Thor laughed. âWe can go now, young man. You have a warriorâs spirit and we must ready you for battle.â He followed Jake down the hallway to the elevators. âLet us venture to the gym and train.â The others followed, leaving Steve with Darcy.
âWeâll keep him safe, Darcy,â Steve promised. âNatasha has worked this out to the last detail. Heâll be fine and will have the time of his life.â
Even with his reassurances, Darcy was nervous. âIâm sure you all have it under control, but itâs a momâs prerogative to worry about her baby.â She smiled softly. âBut heâs so excited to do this, so thereâs no way I could back out. You made sure of that when you promised him that youâd talk to Santa and make this happen.â She reached out and poked Steve in the chest. And then she poked him again. For such a softie, he had awfully firm pecs. âAlright, so run me through this one more time. And get me a cup of coffee while youâre explaining it.â
Steve pulled a cup out of the cupboard and filled it up before handing it over. âTheyâre going to spend some time âtrainingâ down in the gym. Thorâs going to work on stuff like somersaults and Natasha said sheâd teach him how to cartwheel. Stuff like that. Iâm going to head over to that little park just around the corner from the tower. Stark security has already cleared it for a âprivate event.â Once over there, Iâll create some mischief, the Avengers will arrive, and theyâll take me down. Itâll be a simple, but effective mission, and Jake will vanquish the bad guy.â
Darcy narrowed her eyes. âDefine âmischief,â Steve.â
âIâll be tossing water balloons at security,â he laughed as he snagged Darcyâs coffee and took a drink. âNothing too serious and certainly nothing dangerous.â
âWhat about Bruce? Will the Hulk be making an appearance?â
âNot at all. Bruce is going to live stream the whole thing. That way you can see it and we can record it for Jake to watch later.â
Darcy looked impressed. âYou all have put so much effort into this. I cannot thank you enough.â
Steve looked down at the coffee cup still in his hand. âWe all adore Jake. And you.â The tips of Steveâs ears turned pink. âWe just want to see him happy.â
Impulsively, Darcy reached up and kissed Steveâs cheek. âStill, I appreciate all of this, Steve. Heâs so excited.â Her own blush was rivalling the one spreading across Steveâs face. âUh, so whatâs your costume look like?â
âYeah, you have to see this to believe it.â Steve reaches into box on the counter and pulls out an elf costume and mask. Darcy couldnât help but laugh.
âReally? Youâre an elf gone rogue?â
âI know, but it fits the holiday.â
-----
Darcy settled down on her couch to watch the epic battle unfold on her tablet. Bruce found a good place to film, so Darcy had a clear view of all the action. Jake took his role as Captain America very seriously. He led the charge, calling out moves and directions to the others. Training clearly included the necessary vocab for battle, but Darcy couldnât help but giggle when Jake kept telling Thor to watch his flake. Fortunately, Clint spoke kid and could translate. She winced when Jake threw his shield into Steveâs shin. She was pretty sure Steve winced too. In the end, they triumphed over the rogue Christmas elf. Jake led his team home in victory. Her boy was on cloud nine.
As with all epic victories, they celebrated with pizza. Jake provided Darcy with a detailed account of how he, in the awesome and most important role of Captain America, led the Avengers to victory over one of Santaâs mean elves.
âYou did good, kid.â Tony smiled at Jake. âWe couldnât have done it without you.â
Steve reached for another piece of pizza. âIâm so glad you could cover for me, Jake. It would have been awful if Iâd been called away and there was no one to lead the Avengers.â
âAye, you are a most excellent and skilled warrior. I will follow you into battle any time!â Thor raised his glass of Kool-Aid to toast their leader. âCheers to you, young Captain!â Everyone lifted their glass and cheered for Jake.
It wasnât long before exhaustion got the better of the young boy and he fell asleep with his head on the table, still in full uniform.
âI should get this one to bed.â Darcy smiled at her son fondly.
âIâll give you a hand.â Steve pushed his chair back from the table and reached over to pick up the sleeping boy.
Steve carried him down to Darcyâs apartment and into Jakeâs bedroom. Darcy tucked him into bed, not bothering to remove the uniform and taking off only his boots. She followed Steve out of the bedroom, closing the door behind her.
âAgain, I cannot thank you enough. You made his Christmas wish come true.â
Steve couldnât help but smile at Darcy. âIâve already told you. I was happy to do this for him. Heâs good kid and it was great to be able to give him this experience.â
Darcy could feel her breath hitch as she looked up at Steve. Steve bit his lip and that was it for Darcy. She slid her hands up his chest, grasped his shirt by the collar, and pulled him in for a kiss. Steve wrapped his arms around Darcyâs waist and pulled her close.
The kiss was just getting steamy when the bedroom door opened and a small voice said, âThatâs mistletoe above you. Does this mean Iâm getting a baby brother?â
âWhat would you do first if you had Captain America in your bed?â
Steve glares angrily at him and he wishes he could make his damn head explode.
Darcy bites her lip and laughs a little. Â âIâd sit on his face until he made me see stars. Â Gânight, boys!â she yells, blowing them a kiss before slamming the door closed behind her.
Bucky collapses on the couch, laughing so hard he can barely breathe. Â âHave fun with those images in your head, Rogers,â he chokes out.
{The story isnât mine. I just wanted to do some aesthetics to this story. Seriously, guys, check this Shieldshock gem out. Iâm a sucker for those where Darcy has no idea her crush is actually Captain America.}

Darcy meandered through the crowds, her stomach rumbling so loudly, she was certain one of them was going to hear her coming. Â
She needed something substantial. Â Not just bread this time. Â Something fresh. Â Fruit. Â The kids all really liked fruit.
Of course today there seemed to be tables and tables of melons. Â All too big for the likes of Darcy to smuggle out under her dress. Â Â Â Â
Grapes would be easy enough. Â She could probably just nick one or two off each of the bunches. Â The vendors would never miss them. Â
She was about a dozen grapes in when she ran smack dab into a solid wall of man. Â She was so alarmed, she dropped what she was holding. Grapes rolled everywhere. Â
It took him a minute to realize what was happening. Â He knelt to pick them up for her on instinct, but then realized that all the vendors were pointing. Â Shouting. Â
And Darcy was gone. Â Running full tilt towards the angrier-by-second throngs of people because there wasnât any way she was going to stick around for some dope to play white knight. Â
Or she would have been gone if said dope didnât accidentally trip her again.
His hands were on her waist and pulling her up to a standing position. Â âSheâs with me,â he said loudly, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. Â âSheâs with me.â Â
The angry shouts stopped. Â The crowd that had been demanding her blood one second before was suddenly chastised by this tall â albeit â handsome specimen of the male species. Â
He plucked an entire bunch of grapes off the end of the table, handing them to her. Â âHere.â Â
Darcy squinted up at him, trying to place where sheâd seen his face before. Â
It dawned on her around the time heâd loaded up her arms with bread and fruit and salted fish. Â Enough for a week. Â Or a day, if she shared with with all the kids she was looking after. Â
She dropped down to her knee, wobbling slightly in the process.  âYour majestyâŚ.â Â
âNoâŚnoâŚdonât do thatâŚâ  he reached for her arm, helping her stand once more.  âI havenât been a king for the past 70 years, Iâm not about to start now.â
She knew the legends. Â How heâd been asleep for 70 years and woke up just a short while ago. Â Right when the kingdom needed him the most.
âIâm sorry aboutâŚall of thatâŚâ he said, walking alongside her as they left the marketplace.  Heâd taken a couple of the items from her to help ease her load.  âI hope I didnât make things harder for you.â Â
She shrugged. Â âIâll manage.â Â
He smiled softly. Â âHow many will this feed?â Â
âA dozen. Â Children,â she returned. Â âAnd me.â Â
âAnd what will you do tomorrow?â he asked. Â
âIâll manage,â she repeated with a grin.  She hefted the things over onto one side, gesturing with her chin.  âI can take it from here.  Thank youâŚyour majesty.â Â
âSteve,â he corrected. Â âAnd what is your name, if I can be so bold?â Â
âDarcy.â Â
âIf I were to come looking for you again, I could find you with just âDarcyâ?â Â
She smirked. Â âIf you come looking in the right places.â Â Â Â Â
Can anyone help me find a Shieldshock fic with bearded!Steve and Darcy Lewis being in a relationship and her finding out about him being Captain America?
I would also take any Shieldshock recs with this kind of revelation. ;)Â

Darcy was beginning to hate Thursdays. Thursday was named after Thor, and you know who got all jealous and wiggy and twitchy about it despite claims to the contrary? Loki. And when Loki got jealous and wiggy and twitchy and he was bored he resorted to doing shit like -
Darcy sighed and regarded the scene in front of her.
Shit like making the statues in Central Park come alive.Â
It was mayhem. She had only wanted to take a nice spring jog in the Park, maybe ruin the entire thing by getting a rainbow bagel after but of course with her dumb luck she did it on a Thursday.
Tourists were screaming, kids were crying, there was yelling from everyone and the guys selling their mixtapes were gathering their wares and booking it out of there.
And she just saw the Black Widow punch Alice in the face while the White Rabbit bit at Hawkeyes ankles. Falcon and the Winter Soldier were taking turns beating the shit out of Christopher Columbus (and enjoying it immensely going by the grins on their faces, not that she could blame them). Thor was swinging Shakespeare around by his cape, and the Bard did not look at all happy about it. She could not see Cap, but he was probably off doing something noble, like defending a group of school kids from the Bethesda Angel and her army of fat little cherubs.
âI canât fucking believe you!â she yelled at the cotton candy vendor who was decked out in leather in shades of green and gold. Yeah, he thought he was being subtle, but subtlety and Loki went together like her Aunt Myra and dairy, i.e. not at all.
âAh! The she-goatâs friend!â greeted Loki, who in a glow of green transformed back to his skinny, pale self.
She yanked out her earbud and stalked towards him.
âCan we just have one week in the city where you villains arenât pulling crap like this? And on a Thursday?! If you wanna play with your brotherâs big boy friends and be allowed into the clubhouse, just ask, you jackass! This is so dumb â â
âYou do talk too much,â Loki drawled. He wiggled his fingers towards her, then in a wink disappeared and just like that all of the statues were as theyâve always been.
âGet it off me, get it off me, get it off me!!â Clint cried, kicking his feet. Then at the lack of feral bespectacled rabbit, said, âOh. Hey, itâs gone.â
âWhat are you doing here?â Nat asked, while holstering her batons. Sam and Bucky, no longer engaged in battle jogged over to her as well.
Darcy tried to answer but her throat tickled and she coughed to clear it.
âAre you alright?â Thor turned to her with concern.
âOh, Iâm okay,â Darcy replied. At least, thatâs what she wanted to reply. What came out was actually, a high âbzzzzrrpt!!!â noise.
What. The. Shit.
She opened her mouth to speak again only to have that infernal sound come out of her throat again.
âWHAT THE FUCK?!â she wanted to scream. âZZRRRPPP BRT PZZTTT!â was what everyone heard.
Natasha tilted her head to the side.
âDarcy, why â â
âWhoâs got a kazoo?!â Clint asked, sauntering up to the group.
Darcy raised her hand and gestured at her throat.
Fuckinâ Loki!
Darcy glared hard at Thor, put both hands on either side of her head and crooked her fingers.
âAh. It seems this is the doing of my brother. I am very sorry Darcy,â Thor said.
Darcy crossed her arms over her chest and stomped one foot. She tried to telepathically transmit âFIX THIS NOW!â vibes at her Asgardian buddy, but he only lay a huge comforting hand on her shoulder.
âI will journey to Asgard to see about anâŚantidote,â Thor said. âDo not worry, Lady Darcy. Everything will be well.â He hoisted Mjolnir above him and flew up into the sky, leaving Darcy with the Avengers.
Darcy opened her mouth.
Sad kazoo noises came out.
Samâs eyes widened. âWhaaat the hell?â
Bucky managed exactly one, loud bark of laughter until Nat shut him right up by smacking him upside the head.
Back at the Tower, Tony laughed until he turned purple.
At least no one told Cap, yet. She begged them all not to. Darcy was nursing quite the crush on that Star Spangled Hunk of Handsomeness and she wasnât about to have him associate the most annoying sound in the world with her. He was very polite and friendly towards her and they had a great time hanging out together. She tried to hint to him that she was into getting some Blond, Patriotic, Action but felt, sadly, that her efforts were for naught. Still, Bucky mentioned that her overtures werenât going unnoticed.
âHeâs sweet on ya, kid,â Bucky said, in a rare bout of actual helpfulness free of any snark. âHeâs just wrappinâ his brain around that. Heâs as stubborn as a mule, yâknow.â Thoughtfully, he scratched at the stubble on his chin, and fake-leered in her direction. âMaybe wear those red heels around him some more? Thatâll really shove him in the right direction.â
But her heels sat in her closet, unworn.
The last thing she wanted was to be around Steve in herâŚcondition.
It was easy enough to avoid him. He was usually off on missions or making charity appearances or doing training. So for the next couple days, Darcy became an expert in communicating without her voice. Mostly, she typed up whatever she needed to say on her phone.Â
Emojis helped a lot (âI donât wanna live like this 4ever,â Jane read off the phone Darcy handed to her. âSad face, sad face, crying faceâŚEggplant?â Darcy snatched the phone from Janeâs hands and corrected it. âOh. Another crying face.â)
She really did wish sheâd asked Clint to teach her more than curse words in ASL, but that couldnât be helped now. Still, âF Uâ was pretty useful especially when Clint joked that her new voice sounded âlike a bag of bees farting, if bees could fartâ.
Point was, she didnât expect Steve that morning in the common kitchen. If she did, she wouldâve worn the heels. The Red Heels of Sex and maybe a pencil skirt to go with. Not her oversized, ratty t-shirt that had a picture of a sloth on it and the words, âParty Hardâ over the chest paired with her stripy sleep shorts. Steve was pouring himself a cup of coffee, looking more handsome than anyone had a right to be this early in the morning and Darcy tried to make herself as small as possible. Maybe she could hide behind couch before â
âOh! Gâmorning, Darce,â Steve greeted, and smiled that little smile at her that made her stomach go all squishy.
Shit.
She pressed her lips together and awkwardly waved at him.
âIâm uh, glad youâre here actually,â Steve continued, completely oblivious to the fact that she wanted to disappear into the floor and never come out again. âCoffee?â He placed a mug of coffee in front of her along with that Salted Caramel Creamer she liked best and she kept herself from melting into a swoon, but it was a close thing.
She almost opened her mouth to thank him, until she remembered that the voices of a thousand ducks being strangled would come out.
He was looking at her curiously. She nodded her thanks instead, and took a drink of her coffee.
âThereâs this exhibit,â he said, and gave her a hesitant little look from under his long lashes. âAt the MoMA. This woman is splicing old Super 8 films with 80s commercials. Would you like to go?â
Would she like to â
âYes!â she wanted to say. âHells yes!!â But she could only press her lips together. Before she could even nod, it seemed that Steve had misinterpreted her silence.
âUnless you donât want to!â he amended. âWe could go somewhere else. Buck said that maybe â But yâknow, maybe I shouldnât listen to that jerk so â â
Darcy slammed her palms on the table. Their coffee mugs rattled. Steve stopped in the middle of his rambling to regard her with shock.
Making sure Steve was looking right at her, she nodded so hard, she thought sheâd make herself dizzy.
âYeah?â Steve looked so delighted, that she grinned right back. âAre youâŚokay?â he asked, and Darcy rolled her eyes.
God, how she hated this. Darcy Lewis was chatty on a regular day and this was totally unbearable.
Taking a chance, Darcy went right up to Steve Rogers and planted one on him
Everyone thought Steve was apple pie and âyes, maâamâs and helping little old ladies cross the street. And he was. But he was also, as Darcy was beginning to find out from the way he was kissing her â oh so sweet and just a teensy bit dirty â a guy from Brooklyn who wasnât afraid to show his gal how he felt once given the chance.
He was holding her head between his warm, callused hands, and she was still on her toes when they pulled apart. Steveâs lips, pink and little shiny, were curled into a satisfied smile. The sight was so nice, Darcy forgot herself completely and let out a happy sigh.
And it was an actual sigh that came out of her, not the âBzzzrpptâ that she dreaded.
Darcy blinked.
âOh my god,â she exclaimed, never so happy to hear her own voice come from her throat. âIâm not a kazoo anymore!â
âWhat?â
âUgh. Loki. Did a thing.â She placed her fingers on her throat. âIf Iâve been strangely quiet itâs because he made my voice do kazoo noises. But now Iâm cured! Somehow.â
Oh, it was good to have her normal voice back. She bounced on the balls of her feet and clutched at Steveâs shirt happily.
âLoki did this?â Steve asked again, this time with a furrow between his brows. âHow long â Why didnât you tell me â â
âUgh, I was so embarrassed!â Darcy confessed, and buried her face in his wonderfully solid and warm chest. She nuzzled further into him when his arms came around her. âI had this crush on you, so I told everyone to keep their mouths shut, because I didnât want to speak to you while sounding like Satanâs own trumpet.â
âOh, sweetheart,â he sighed, and brushed back a strand of hair from her face. âI wouldâve â â
The door swung open and Thorâs voice boomed out from behind them.
Darcy, still in Steveâs arms, jolted and relished that it was her own voice that exclaimed, âWhat the hell, Thor?!â at the same time Thor shouted, âTrue Loveâs Kiss, Lady Darcy!â
Then Thor took in the couple before him, arms still around each other and cuddling in the kitchen, and chuckled.
âI see youâve figured it out for yourselves! I congratulate you both!â he exclaimed, cheerily. âDo not worry, my friend. My brotherâs being dealt with.â Thor paused and gave Darcy a gentle look. âYou are truly alright?â
Darcy nodded. Wait. Old habits, she thought, and then responded with a happy, âYeah, Iâm okay, big guy. Thanks.â
Thor grinned and left to go find Jane.
Steve looked down at her with bemused blue eyes. âA kazoo? Really?â
âYup. And boy am I glad Iâm not making those weird noises anymore,â Darcy said.
âFor the record, I wouldâve still asked you out even if youâŚâ
âSounded like the screams of Oompa Loompas played backwards and at five times the speed?â
âSure. That.â
âOh, damn. Bucky was right, you are sweet on me, Rogers!â Darcy joked, then pulled Steve down for another kiss.
Steve never has been very good at food. Growing up it was scarce and precious and his mom or Bucky usually managed the meals. In the military he knew exactly what he was getting. And with SHIELD and the Avengers, well letâs just say he didn't cook much. But now - well, now heâs on his own.Â
Which is why heâs standing in the frozen food aisle at 10 pm lost in seventeen kinds of fried potatoes.Â
âWaffle fries.âÂ
The voice is sure and friendly, and when he turns, matches the big smile and shining eyes of the girl attached to it.Â
âIâm sorry?â
âAlways go with waffle fries. Harder to overcook, not as hipster as sweet potato, not actual callbacks to elementary school like tots.â She reaches around him and pulls out a bag. âThese are good.â
âUh, thanks.â He drops them into his mostly empty cart. âIâm -â
âOh, I know. And actually, Iâm here - well, a friend sent me. But I think I might have been followed. I donât suppose youâve got that shield handy somewhere in that very tight t-shirt?â
Her red lips curl hopefully, but he can see the stress in her eyes. Steve does a quick scan in the freezer glass and picks out at least two darkly-dressed figures moving methodically down the front of the store.Â
âNope, no shield today.â What did Nat say? Public affection makes people uncomfortable. âI might have a different idea, and I apologize in advance, maâam.â He pulls at her jacket, and she lets him have it, bemused. He tosses it into his cart under the 12-pack of coke.Â
âOh, itâs not maâam, itâs-âÂ
One of the thugs turns the corner and Steve backs the mystery girl into a freezer door and puts his arms around her. Sheâs warm and soft and very surprised, but after a second, she dives in enthusiastically. He lets her lead, following as she tugs his head closer and nudges him in between her legs. Then she grabs his hand and puts it on her side and Steve canât hold back a huff of laughter. The minx is enjoying this.Â
So is he, but still.Â
He hears the thug move past them to the next aisle, and slides his other hand into his cart for the jacket. But sheâs still kissing him and it doesnât seem like a great idea to stop when sheâs having such a good time.Â
He eventually slides his lips to her ear and grins. âI think theyâre gone.â
âYou sure?â Her voice is breathy and full of laughter. âWe might need to hide a little longer.â
âIâm sure, maâam.â He steps back and hands her the jacket. âIâd apologize but I got the sense-â
âMmmm,â she licks her lips as she slides the leather back on and itâs all he can do not to offer to help. âNo apologies needed, soldier. And I was trying to tell you, itâs not maâam. Itâs Darcy.â
It rings a bell. âJane Fosterâs Darcy?â
âSmart man. Now come on, weâve got a plane to catch.â
